2013 Taxes

For 2013 income, I had two W2 forms, two federal government annuity forms and one social security form. Half the year I worked full time in one state (collecting salary, one retirement annuity and social security) and the other half I was fully retired in another state (collecting two annuities and social security). Fortunately, my retirement state does not impose state taxes so I just needed Federal and one state from Turbo Tax. Filing was a breeze and I got a nice state and federal refund.
One con: For some reason, my total W2 wages for the state showed correctly on my computer screen in TurboTax but I owed the state a large amount, which looked very wrong to me. I printed the state form out and it incorrectly showed my W2 wages twice the actual amount. I edited the form, deleted the wages amount, clicked on continue, went back to W2 wages and reentered the same correct amount that was there previously. That did the trick. Now TurboTax prints my wages correctly and the state owes me. However, I'm 69 with a somewhat complicated return and I completed my taxes with no help from anyone. Just TurboTax. TurboTax rocks!
What's great about it: Extremely easy to use. Got a nice refund.
What's not so great: Small apparent glitch in program

Tax preparation

What's great about it: quick, well organized, easy to follow
What's not so great: when moving on to the next section, would need to scroll to the bottom to find my place

Was satisfied with the experience. But, have not yet been given the opportunity to download quarterly estimated tax payments.
What's great about it: Easy Guide
What's not so great: was concerned that sales tax forms did not dosnload prior to starting return. However I goe an update a few days later.

2013 tax return

Had a very frustrating time getting my wife's IRA information into the income side or the tax statement. I have both of these at Fidelity. All my info came in automaticly. After several attempts, I had to input all her IRA data manually. Would be nice if there was a prompt after the first IRA is completed that would say. "Does your spouse also have an IRA?" If yes, Turbo tax should start all over with the prompts to complete that IRA info. Got all the way through the Income sub set before seeing that her IRA info was not included.
What's great about it: Most every thing was very good. Prompts make it easy.
What's not so great: Had a lot of trouble trying to figure how to get both my IRA and wifes distribution data down loaded so it would work

State was super difficult

Foregn taxes verbiage on what to do was insanly confusing.
The Arizona State forms gave no help and used tons of undefined jargon.
"Did you have an HUDPI? or form 56834b" No help referances to what they were. Just guessing and saying no I think looses me money.
Also he Fed return checked out but the state return requires some unexplained 2012 values for Dividens added to the Fed form. I couldn't figure out what it was for. So I chose 0. and rechecked the Fed form. I'm not a dummy. I am a computer programmer. If I can't figure it out only a CPA might,by reading the 1040 Docs. Not Good.
The last couple of years the software has gotten lame. I'll be looking at others next year.

Simple review

Last year the program looked for updates as soon as I opened the program. That was much more helpful and would have saved me quite of bit of extra time I spent looking for a schedule that it eventually looked for when I got to the review stage. Otherwise the program seems pretty straight forward and easy to use.
What's great about it: Quick and pretty easy
What's not so great: Didn't look for updates until I got to the review stage.

to enter that using TurboTax. I may have to search for another way of doing my taxes along with many other Ohio safety force workers.
What's great about it: Easy to use
What's not so great: Ohio allows a $3,000.00 gross income exclusion under the Federal Pension Protection Act of 2006 but can't find any place
