Worst TurboTax program I've ever had
on April 2, 2014
Posted by: great59er
I've been using TurboTax for years but this year's version appears to be the worst I've encountered. It used to be very easy to answer the questions or to get extra help from the help pages. Not any more. There seems to be areas of income that must be reported on a form that doesn't seem appropriate. For example, I'm 1/2 owner of pasture land where my partner and I bale and sell hay. The only way it appears to be covered is to list the property as rental property even though we don't rent it to anyone. In the old days I could just declare it as miscellaneous income and fill it out on Schedule E. Now I don't know if I've done it properly or not.
Program takes forever to load. Up until last year's version it never took so long. And, I think the blurb you have at the bottom of the loading screen about taking longer than expected is asinine.
What's great about it: None
What's not so great: Poor questions, useless help info, uncovered income instances

2013 Review

I have been using Turbo Tax to file my family tax returns for over ten years and during that time I have been a satisfied customer. Several years back, I had a need to refile several years return to make correction. The process was straight forward and was sufficient to satisfy the IRS auditors.
What's great about it: ease of use
What's not so great: found no cons

Our experience

It is usually fairly easy to do. This year TURBO TAX would not update on our Apple Desk Top computer and would not let us efile. It was so frustrating as we do our daughters taxes first. We had to go do it on a laptop. We had no problem on the macbook Pro laptop. We were really upset we could not use our desk top computor where all our files are.
What's great about it: Fairly easy to use
What's not so great: Would not upload the udates for taxes on our Apple Desktop,

I have used Turbo Tax for the past 4 years and this year has been the easiest to use of them all. Asked all of the questions in a simple and easy format to follow and made it easy to input the requested information.
I will continue to use Turbo Tax for my tax preparation and will recommend it to all my own friends who do their taxea.
What's great about it: Simple but very complete and accurate and results are great

Some major frustrations
on April 2, 2014

When I reached the 'E-filing"point I was repeatedly getting a message saying "unable to file until you download Turbo tax updates," or words to that effect.
Over and over, I would go through the process to get those supposed updates, all to no avail as to be able to e-file.
Finally gave up for the day. Next day I tried again. Finally, thank goodness, success.

PS
I find the questions at the end of this irrelevant for purposes of this correspondence.

Depreciation gets all screwed up when you download your business income from Quick Books if you do not use the Quick Books depreciation program which uses the tax basis of accounting for depreciation. I want to use GAAP on my books and taxes so I wound up having to put depreciation under other expenses.
What's great about it: Lots of volume made easy with imports
What's not so great: Cannot enter depreciation without using a depreciation program.
Pros: I moved

My taxes are pretty simple, own a home, some vehicles and a few w-2's for income. There's no way I need to spend a couple hundred to a seasonal employee that enters my info into a program not unlike Turbo Tax.
What's great about it: customer service helped with an ammended return in 2012
What's not so great: I'm payin' the state : (
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

TurboTax Filing for 2013
on April 2, 2014

Easy process. I have been using TurboTax for years, so I was fairly familiar with their method. I followed the questioning path because I didn't want to miss anything. For someone with more tax experience than I have it probably would have been simpler to take the available short cuts.
Simple, direct, detailed, and effective.
What's great about it: Great for an amateur, which I was. I really had no problems following their method, because I had a simple return.
What's not so great: None.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
