TurboTax Deluxe 2013
on April 2, 2014

I've been using TurboTax for over 10 years and have been very pleased with the results. I have a somewhat complex tax situation (the printout is almost an inch thick), but Deluxe has done well with the complexities. They have refined the interview process each year and generally it is improving and simplifying the process inputting information that allows TurboTax translate this into data and puts it into the right places in a myriad of complex forms. The import of data from my financial institution is a lifesaver and I am sure I would never attempt it any other way. Every year I do find some issues. This year one was a glitch that the data import didn't accept/record a zero basis on a stock sale. The state tax part of the program has been good on typical things but every year it has trouble with allocation of tax credits between spouses. The most troubling issue this year was repeated program crashes (on my Mac) during the Fed filing process. No problems in the preceding week of heavy use. After reading the help info on line I was able to get past this (yes I was using the Mac version). Another troubling issue this year (hasn't been a problem in past years) is failing to provide opportunity to print out state forms for filing when I selected e-file for Fed and file by mail for state. TurboTax led me through e filing and printout of record copies but didn't provide an option to print the state forms. I had to manually go back in the outline to final review and repeat the steps to get back to a printing option. I couldn't find the normal print options offered in past years.
What's great about it: Does great job of filling out complex forms from a simple interview.
What's not so great: Occasionally has some glitches and some good previous year features are lost.

AZ State Filing Instructions
on April 2, 2014

Your instructions for filing my AZ return were incomplete: 1 You failed to note that I had to include a copy of Schedule A from my Federal return
2. You failed to note that I had to include a copy of my NJ tax return for which I am claiming a credit in AZ.
What's not so great: Incomplete instructions

Excellent Software!!!

Turbo Tax is fantastic. I have been using it for year. Most people are wasting their money going to a local tax preparer.
The interview forms and questions force you to find all deductions. The local tax preparer couldn't care less if they left out some deduction.
It isn't hard, spend some time and you'll never have to pay anybody to prepare you return again.
What's great about it: Easy to use
What's not so great: Home office deduction was a bit confusing, we moved mid year. Allocating mortgage interest expense was confusing.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I moved, I bought or sold investments

It's Over!

1. I closed out of Turbo Tax. When I reopened my return, data I knew I had entered was missing and my refund was $500 less that when I had left off. This required me to go through the complete return again. The problem seemed to be that all my entries were not saved. The second time I manually saved after completing each section and the problem did not reoccur. 2. I put in some place holders while I was entering data for information I had not yet acquired. TurboTax would not allow me to remove the place holders and I wound up generating a new return to get rid of the placeholders. All the information I had entered on donations that was different from 2012 had to be reentered. Far more time consuming than it should have been.
What's great about it: Transfer from 2012; Data Entry
What's not so great: Kept losing data. Problems going back to correct entries.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

I have been using Turbo Tax for about 25 years. the inflow of info from the previous year return alone is worth the cost. we moved this year, so had a lot of donated goods, and It was so easy using It's Deductable, and that info flowed right into the return!
What's great about it: inflow of info from previous year return, and It's Deductable
What's not so great: I realy can't think of any
Pros: I moved
