TurboTax 2013
on April 1, 2014

1. Estates & Trusts are only handled by Turbo-Tax version not available on Mac. Had to do two returns for trusts by hand.
2. Tax summary page reports "effective tax rate" but not the marginal tax rate (also known as "tax bracket") -- both numbers may be important, depending on the tax situation. Turbo-Tax should report both numbers.
3. I got into trouble with an IRA contribution this year, wherein Turbo-Tax claimed it was too much, which would have led to all sorts of trouble/complications. The pop-up link quoted rules violated, but no indication of what calculation had gone wrong to create the violation. It took hours of pouring over "tax forms" to back-trace to where the error came from.
What's great about it: Best way to do almost everything with personal income taxes!
What's not so great: No estates or trusts, No marginal tax rate, Hard to find out why

Another Success Story!
on April 1, 2014

We have used Turbo Tax for many years now. It is so nice to do it ourselves. No meeting with a CPA, do all the work ourselves anyway and then pay him to use Turbo Tax to print our return! We like cutting out the middle man. We encourage all of our friends to try it, knowing if they do they will love it as we do.
What's great about it: Easy, quick, rather fun
What's not so great: Turbo Tax used to automatically check for updates. This year I had to search around to get them.

Have used Turbo Tax since 2003, Like the fact that Turbo Tax explains difficult questions.
What's great about it: Review of errors
What's not so great: Not sure when I need to pay the IRS the $120.00 for estimated payments
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Still looking and waiting for better Printing Options! Still (from last year and the years prior) to be able to print single pages at our option ~ one page or several different pages at our choosing.
What's great about it: Easy to Use
What's not so great: Printing Options

Solid phone help!
on April 1, 2014

After a bit of unsuccessful searching, I found your phone number to help with the efile loop which wouldn't quit asking for updates. The telephone yielded a person who quickly and patiently solved the problem.
What's great about it: Speed and efficiency, right up to the last step.
What's not so great: Efile didn't work as well as in the past.

I just tried to print my Federal return for filing. TT went off into printing or saving my return with detailed backup, rather then printing my Federal return. Grrrr... TT should just do what it says it will do. And I had a heck of a time entering a legal settlement that gave rise to a taxable LT capital gain - took hours to find the input form - the guided process was totally useless.
What's great about it: Good basics
What's not so great: Difficult details
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Turbo Tax OK, but Quicken/Mac stinks.
on April 1, 2014
Posted by: macuserjohn
I have had Turbo Tax and Quicken for quite a while, since I discovered that I kept making simple math mistakes on my returns. Now for Windows users Turbo Tax imports Quicken data. Mac users are left out in the cold. Intuit makes both products, but neglects Mac users. We should have the full array of Intuit products for the Mac. This year.
What's great about it: Let me get the job done without math mistakes
What's not so great: Had to reboot to send e-files, Couldn't transfer quicken data
