One Big Improvement & Then A Rant
on April 1, 2014
Posted by: DoubleJeopardy
So the one improvement that is drastically needed is that there needs to be a transmission confirmation page that prints with the Tax Return. It is not even included with the printing selection, "Tax Return, all calculation worksheets selection." The transmission confirmation page should include the return#s# filed, the transmission date/time, estimated acceptance date, and methods for tracking acceptance and/or your refund, just as shown in TurboTax before the option to print. Why doesn't this information print with the return? Who knows, it should.
Now for my rant. Even after thoroughly searching through TurboTax for legitimate ways to avoid paying taxes twice, I'm still paying tax twice, through income tax and excise tax on many things. I get deductions for mortgage interest, real estate taxes, car registration fees, and sales tax, but not on airfare, hotel taxes and fees, and local taxes on electric, gas, and water and sewer. If the point in deducting sales tax, for example, is not to pay a double-jeopardy tax, then why do I pay an excise tax on so many other goods and services? I think that even foreign sales tax is deductible #although this is hard to find in TurboTax#... but the taxes I pay on alcohol, tobacco, and gas are not deductible? It doesn't make much sense.
What's great about it: I got lots of money back.
What's not so great: A transmission confirmation page needs to print with the return, and I still paid tax twice on a lot of things...
Pros: I bought or sold investments

check your work BEFORE filing

A comment to review the numbers to insure their accuracy would have saved me additional grief. The federal government rejected me because I typed one wrong number in my social security number. The state took it. So do I need to refile my state as well? This is not discussed. The name and number did not match.
What's great about it: Easy to follow instructions
What's not so great: Misstyped numbers can cause rejection
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Overall better and less expensive than an accountant.
What's great about it: Has good tools and resources
What's not so great: It sometimes has too many items that don't make sense or unclear as to what forms are for what deductions.

Good Experience

Taxes are such a pain and very scary at times. TT makes it easier to deal with because it is simple to use and allows you to take your time (and much needed coffee breaks). As stated above my only gripe is I wish I could transfer my business info directly into the personal taxes.
What's great about it: TT is easy to use, fast, and clear instructions
What's not so great: I wish the business program could transfer over to the personal taxes
