IRA section is my big frustration
on March 30, 2014
Posted by: ComelyCarol
For someone who has contributed too much for a Roth IRA, had to convert it to a non-deductible regular IRA, then convert it back again, this section is very hard to get right.
TurboTax needs to improve it.
What's great about it: Dealing with capital gains would be a nightmare without it
What's not so great: I have spent hours trying to sort out the IRA section, for 2 years now.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments

Worse each year

I've used TurboTax for longer than I can remember. Each year the quality just seems to go down. Frustrations this year: I lost at least an hour dealing with the crash associated with downloading the state forms - this mistake should never have happened and shows very poor handling of customer needs. In prior years I've used the online version. This year I'm half way through the return and learn that I can't enter self-employed income other than SE-EZ unless I upgrade to the business version (which costs a lot and has many features I don't need) or go to the disk version, which I ultimately did. State pricing also now seems out of control - high for the taxes and even higher for e-file. A couple of years ago I had a small error but couldn't recover the data I had used because the online version didn't store the behind-the-scenes information used to complete the forms. I trust this product, but the pricing and customer service are getting harder to accept.
What's great about it: Still overall a solid product
What's not so great: State download crash unforgivable; products confused

Much detailed help as needed.

My only problem was in not having my own basic knowledge of IRS rulings and regs. And I did taxes once, back in 2004 (or so, after taking a course). Well, it's very complicated and the IRS probably doesn't want to make it simple, for that would put many people out of work (lawyers and accountants)..
What's great about it: Clear with questions and answers at every point.
What's not so great: No cons, except I need to read the IRS documentation more.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Trouble with State Return
on March 30, 2014
Posted by: allentonian
TurboTax was unable to transfer all the required information from the federal forms to the PA state forms. I had to go directly into the state forms and enter some data. I was unable to find a way to get the W-2 summary form to be filled in with federal data. I will have to print out the schedule and fill it in by hand. This means I will have to file a paper tax return. This did not happen last year. The state forms and filing have never been as robust as the federal forms, but 2013 was a big disappointment and a move backwards in ease of use.
What's great about it: Federal return worked fine
What's not so great: Federal return data did not transfer to PA State return completely

TTax saved hours of circular logic and "tax-ese."

I did my son's taxes after he moved states this year, thinking it wouldn't be much more difficult than all the years of just one state. I even opted NOT to pay for the TTax module for the new state, figuring I could use the new state's internet site and save some money. WRONG!! Not only was the new state totally different, but the website had me jumping all over seven different forms to try and figure out how to split his income liability between the two states.
When I gave up and spent the extra $$, I kicked myself in the butt for having tried to saved a few bucks. With TTax, I saved time and found more peace of mind. Thanks Intuit!
What's great about it: TTax made taxes after moving states a breeze.
What's not so great: I had to pay more, but the ease and peace of mind was worth it.
Pros: I moved

Very thorough for those with common situations

If you have a relatively "normal" tax situation, TurboTax is probably all you need. "Normal" means a mortgage, some business expenses from self-employment, interest/dividend/royalty income, charitable deductions, maybe some student loan interest, and perhaps a dependent or two. If you have complex investment scenarios, with carryover from previous years, or moving expenses, or other unusually complex tax issues, you might benefit from professional guidance, but you have to weigh that against the fee you will have to pay, probably 10x the cost of TurboTax. The "walk through" method is very thorough, and you can always check them out and just answer "No" if they don't apply, so you don't need to be an accountant to save yourself hundreds of dollars by using TurboTax instead of going to a "professional", who is likely using similar software anyway. Besides, they usually give you a worksheet to prepare, and by the time you've added things up and put them on that list, you've done most of the real work anyway, and can just enter those values in TurboTax yourself! :-)
What's great about it: Easy to navigate, easy to import last year's data
What's not so great: n/a
