Charged for e-file but didn't get e-file
on March 28, 2014

I have used TurboTax for maybe 10 years or more. No complaints. This year, I decided as usual to e-file. After I agreed to allow a direct deduction from my bank for the tax payment and agreed to pay for the e-file service by charging my credit card, the software was unable to complete the e-filing. The error message indicated that I must get the latest updates to Turbotax before my taxes could be filed. I followed the instructions explicitly, but it would not perform the software update, so all I could do was, print and mail my return. Problem with this is that I don't have any idea what happened to the direct payment of taxes that I authorized and I have no idea how to get a refund of the e-file fee that I was charged. Every avenue in Turbotax indicates that the fee is gone and there are no refunds - sorry. I will never use E-file again and may never use TurboTax again. There seems to be no way to ask a simple question in this software. All ther is is message boards where you try to find a similar issue which is hopeless. I am definitely going to look for another way to do my taxes next year.
What's great about it: Software is great for tax prep
What's not so great: E-file snags are a nightmre

2013 TurboTax Review Comments

Somewhat confusing because proceeding to the next step was sometimes very clear and sometimes a question was asked rather than just stating "continue to next section" or something similar.
I did have a question about how to respond to Turbotax's instructions for Required Minimum Distributions when the distribution for the year is above the RMD. This is really confusing and needs to be made very clear. If calculation is required, all required information needs to be fully defined.
I've used TurboTax for many years. It's not perfect yet.
What's great about it: Fairly clear instructions
What's not so great: Inconsistent terminology for the same general action

Happy but frustrated
on March 28, 2014

1, The program was hampered by lack of clear instructions in an unusual situation. 2. In the Review section on Schedule E, the program could not distinguish the difference between Rental Property and royalty Rents. In the Review, it would ask for days the property was rented, days occupied by owner. If I put any values in either box, it would ask a bunch of questions that had nothing to do with royalty Rent. I finally entered a zero in each box and the program said that the sum of the boxes had to add up to 365. So I put a zero in one box and nothing in the other. The program then said that since this was royalty Rent, there should be no entry in either box but it would not let me delete the zero--so round and round we went and the program never would remove this "error".
What's great about it: Easy to input
What's not so great: Hard to find out where some data came from.

E file

The program said I was fine, but when I tried the transfer, the program said "No Baby try again". I tried 5 times, & TT said that there was a mistake and if you fail after several attempts, then you have to send it by mail. Prior to that I went through the programme several tymes & TT said I was cool but at the end, when I tried the transfer TT said "No Can Do" . Now I have to find all the forms, go to the post office. Instead of doing it the easy way, I now I have to go to the post office etc. A real drag.
What's great about it: personal information, calculations
What's not so great: Could not eFile.

Deductions
on March 28, 2014

For the last 3 years I have had to total up all our deductions only to find out that the standard deduction is greater. Can you put in a short cut that saves me the trouble of doing this? I should be able to choose the standard deduction if I want before having to go through all the work getting my deductions in order. Our situation doesn't change too much from year to year so this short cut would be very helpful.
Many thanks,
Bill

Easiest Filing Ever!
on March 28, 2014

I am small business owner and have been using Turbo Tax for the last couple of years.
They make filing comprehensive and extremely easy. I have never been confused because there is always a link that explains every part of the return.
The best part is, they make sure I cover everything and double check it all before it gets transmitted.
I would encourage people with simple filings to use Turbo tax and it costs less than going to an accountant!
What's great about it: Turbo Tax pullled all my information from the last filing and it was a breeeze filing my 2013 returns after that!
What's not so great: There wasn't anything not to like!

I am so glad that Turbo Tax makes it understandabl

I really like being able to DL Turbo Tax and work on any of my machines. I also like the simple instructions and screens. I would like to be able to see where I just was, and what is next though. I see nothing for part-time employment when a person has two very similar jobs, say working a full time career at one government agency (Fire Department or police department), but supplementing income in a second or third jurisdiction.
What's great about it: I like the easy information organization
What's not so great: Would like more adjustment in the movement through the screens.

Finally, a tax payer's affordable solution to painlessly file tax returns.
What's great about it: Takes you by the hand each step of the way
What's not so great: None so far
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
