Quick and efficient

Used to like to do my own taxes on paper until it became much more complicated over the years and had to start using a CPA. He just retired and I had to do it myself again. Luckily, my life and work has become less complicated and the modern software for non-profesional filers has made it even easier. First time user of TurboTax went well, and when I had questions, the phone support people were efficient and knowledgeable in answering my questions and putting me on the right track.
What's great about it: Easy to use following the questions
What's not so great: But a lot of detail the first time using it

I found your live help on foreign taxes very helpful. Conversely the interview on foreign taxes was confusing.
Some parts of interview seemed to repeat themselves.
Printing my returns seemed harder this year than in previous years.
The screens about printing seemed to go in cirles, and there was
no simple way pick the files you want printed, and hit a print button.

Critique of TurboTax

Whereas I like the ease with which TurboTax runs one through all the various elements of declaring one's taxes which saves hours of agonizing over a byzantine tax code unless one gives up and opts for the standardized deduction, I find a few elements linked to the tyranny of computer code. For one, it was impossible to declare a foreign tax credit. I found myself in a computer loop that didn't allow for any declaration of foreign taxes paid that would allow for the credit, despite having searched all allowable options. My only recourse here is to modify by hand my tax declaration to include those credits. I had the same problem with the 2011 and 2012 versions, and had to modify my tax claims by hand accordingly, but this requires sending in a mail form. It would be convenient for me if you modified the program to allow one to insert an amount of foreign tax credit (IRS has never contested my claims because I accompany bank statements that specify the foreign taxes paid).
Otherwise the program is convenient and an enormous time-saver.

What's great about it: It's easy to use. It most likely finds me more deductions than I could find myself.
What's not so great: Foreign tax credits are impossible to declare. It works as a loop that sends you back to zero.

over all, this year's Turbo Tax seemed slower and not as flowing as past years....not sure why, just an overall feeling....but everything works and works well
