User interface for data entry needs work
on March 22, 2014
Posted by: MikeInPoway
I really like this product, and would like to write a good review.. Sorry, but product design quality is mixed: 3-1/2 stars.
Mostly intuitive and efficient user interface. Promotes accurate data entry. Auto-fill and comparisons to prior year prevent omissions. Lots of help. But...
I deducted one full star for the awful, painfully cumbersome data entry user interface for Charitable Contributions. Multiple pages and multiple mouse clicks just to fill three boxes - charity name, date, amount - over and over and over. No excuse for this. The Charitable Contribution data entry should start with a shortcut page for one-time monetary contributions that is in the form of a three column table - charity, date, amount. Just fill in the boxes like an Excel spreadsheet. THEN the special cases - multiple contributions, in-kind, etc. - using the present user interface. That would cut charity data entry time by at least half, probably 75%, and greatly reduce frustration at wasting my time emulating a particularly dull data entry clerk. If entering addresses for every charity given a $25 contribution hadn't been eliminated the ding would have been two stars.
I deducted another half star for another completely unnecessary annoying feature -- repetitively asking if investment info should be imported from Quicken or a brokerage account. The program doesn't give the opportunity to say "Don't bother me again" until the THIRD "NO" entry. Ask the question right one time -- yes or no, this entry only or all entries -- and if the answer is "NO, NO" shut this annoying dialogue box OFF for good the first time.
If the GUI programmers make excuses about how their way is better, loan them out for a week to an accountant who uses TurboTax to prepare tax returns for upper income taxpayers. After some real experience entering charity and investment data line items (over and over and over) they'll sing a different tune.
What's great about it: Auto-fill and comparison to prior year, mostly efficient data entry, quick computation
What's not so great: Painfully cumbersome repetitive data entry for Charitable Contributions

The software flowed easily from topic to topic and gives clarifying information on areas that are a bit "fuzzy".
What's great about it: enjoy the ease of the software
What's not so great: doesn't read W2s for disability benefits (12J)
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Not happy this year.. Costs too much to e-file state return. Already paid for deluxe turbo tax and then i have to purchase another to e file state? Yikes!!!!! Also. for some reason cannot print out my return. It will only allow me to save as pdf or print preview...What's with that?
What's great about it: Always love the ease and speed
What's not so great: cost high on filing state return

I am a return customer, and will be next year. TurboTax makes filing taxes easy from the convenience of your home. Cheaper than going to the local offices that offer to do your taxes (add waiting in line or scheduling to do it and spending probably more time than needed). TT automatically reuses information from last year's file saving you time and nerves. Thanks!
What's great about it: easy to follow, convenient, cost effective
What's not so great: none

Turbo Tax My kind of Tax Program
on March 22, 2014

First I really love this program and have used it for years. I love it because it is thorough and doesn't let you miss anything. It is accurate and fills in all the proper fields on the return. I'm getting a little long in the tooth and remember hand filled in returns and the headache of trying to follow the instructions (such as; add line b d and e together on line g then place answer on line 10 if greater than line 5c and on line 15 if c is less than Line 6 on Schedule A line 13c.) Ugg what a headache. I don't get headaches while doing taxes anymore since using turbo tax.
I mostly don't use the guided input any more. However, if I'm not sure about something I can be guided for a short time and be sure to get it right.
I just love putting in the basic information and seeing a beautiful finished return printing out. I feel really sure that my return is correct after it goes through the review process. I also know that my return has a low chance of audit after it has been checked for red flags that could trigger an audit.
So what is not to love here? If I did this review any other year I would probably say there were no cons. However, for me this year, and it may have been my fault, I missed updating until I realized that it was not making me update all the time. In the past updating was required from the beginning.
I was working along and had more than half of the data input . I thought I'd better do an update. Where the heck did the updater go. I fooled around for awhile and finally found I had to download the updater. Running it after I got it downloaded I found that it took about 16 minutes to update and my computer is no slouch. I knew it was updating as I saw the proper lights blinking on my computer showing action. However, I could not get off the page where I had pressed the update button at all. It would just beep at me for everything I tried to do to get off of that screen. I finally had to move the cursor over to the bottom right corner of my screen in order to display no screens. Then I saw the updater showing what was being done. Ahh what a relief to see the screen working again showing what was to be downloaded and then installed. It also let me know about how long it would take. A good thing. .
Turbo tax; you might fix that situation by installing the updater with the tax program and allow for updates as you go. Sort of like you used to do. Just a thought.
Otherwise to me it is still the best program around and I will keep using it till I die; probably. If you are reading this and considering whether or not to get this program my true best advice is to (GO FOR IT) You won't regret it.
I'm retired. That means very very tired. If I work at this tax preparation for too long I will probably fall asleep. Then I get to start over again in order to find out where my input might have gotten a little fuzzy. At least I get an extra exemption now.
What's great about it: Really really easy for everyone: from the first timer to the pro. Thats just the first good stuff. It is accurate.
What's not so great: It is usually great about updating as you go. Almost missed updating.
