Worked really well
on March 21, 2014

Quick and easy tax filing. Did both Federal & NY state after work tonight. Only PA to go. Has to be done separately due to their process, but really went quick and easy. My husband retired this year and I wasn't looking forward to entering his Social Security and figuring all that out. But it was really easy.
What's great about it: Collected data that remains the same from last year's return
What's not so great: Need to walk through a lot of steps I didn't need.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

State of Confusion
on March 21, 2014
Posted by: Cubster
On one hand it said we were due a Refund from our State Taxes while at the same time it said we owed an amount that did not total the estimated tax amount for the quarter. That owed amount should have been labeled as an estimated tax payment. It caused confusion.
What's great about it: Easier this year for Charitable Deductions
What's not so great: Duplicity on the States
Pros: I bought or sold investments

I filed my taxes in record time as so much information is kept from year to year and does not need to be redone unless something has changed.
What's great about it: Lots of CLEAR instructions Many checks and balances
What's not so great: many, many questions

Mixed

Generally easy to use but I like to see what happens to the numbers and why certain results are generated - and if they are generated. TT does not do that unless one looks at the "forms" view, a process that can be time-consuming - and then you have to know where to look. The Contributions list is very awkward in use - not alphabetical, time-consuming when you had to enter various kinds of contributions for the same charity.
TT appears to use certain implicit assumptions but it is not always clear what those assumptions are.
Too many upselling attempts within the software. That is annoying.
In its effort to make the process easy, TT has made the tax process appear even more opaque, removing any real understanding from the process. I don't think this is a good thing.
What's great about it: Seemed to cover most situations.
What's not so great: Did not provide suffiicient detail on how figures were determined - entries placed in "black box" and answers generated.

1099 imports
on March 21, 2014

Be very care and check each imported 1099 before hitting the import button. I have a situation where one of my relatives financial data is linked to my investment account for ease of management and it was inadvertently added to my income even though there was a different name on the1099-DIV form.
What's not so great: once the 1099 info is imported it seems to lose some of its identifying featues
