Installation Time
on March 20, 2014
Posted by: Dadster3
It took about 1.5 hours to load TT 2013. That's a long time, but the real issue is the lack of progress reports. Most of the time was taken up in correcting something in Framework. For long periods there would be nothing happening on the bar gauge, and/or long periods when the hard drive was running but I had no idea what was happening. Was it working or just caught in some endless loop?
There were 3 other file corrections that took only minutes and needed no indication that something positive was happening. The Framework patch was far too long not to have some feedback.
I've been using TT for a lot of years now and I don't recall ever having installation take this long.
What's not so great: Installation had insufficient feedback on installation progress.

Standard vs Itemized
on March 20, 2014

We had our tax return from last year that was used as a comparision to this year, which was nice, but when we ended this year with only a standard deduction I didn't get a satisfactory answer as to why. To me things did not look that different and I am now left feeling like things aren't the way they should be. I have been itemizing for years and this is the first time I am not able to, I would of liked a comparision of 2012 to 2013 and the reason why a standard deduction is best for us this year. When last year it was with itemization.
What's great about it: Walks you through all possible deductions
What's not so great: Does not explain enough

Maybe in future you could set up continuing on line accounts and have on going services and remove need for CD.
What's great about it: EZ to follow
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Easy Filings, State and Fed
on March 20, 2014

Turbo Tax makes it easy...at first I was apprehensive because of the change in state residency during the year, but Turbo Tax figured it all out for me. Without it, I would have spent several hundred dollars for tax filing assistance.
What's great about it: Clearly defined instructions for most part, quick review process
What's not so great: Mass State tax Health Care forms a bit confusing at first, but got through it ok.
Pros: I moved, I bought or sold investments

Taxes were easy to file

Right off the bat after the first W2 is entered its time dance, because look at your refund. He haw!
All in all it did what I paid for it to do, electronically file my taxes. It does come with a cost of not only the package but all the add-on's including state plus filing state.
I did not need the extras but if I did it would have been cheaper to go to a tax preparer.
What's great about it: Pulled in last years information
What's not so great: Too much flashy "Look what we did for you"

Turbo Tax Deluxe 2013 w/state

Best Turbo Tax yet. The ease of entering information was better that any year that I've used (since 2009). In the past information from life insurance policies.... what is taxable, what is not... has been difficult to determine. Now you forms fit and agree with State Farm and with Northwest Mutual. I am a convinced user! The NC retirement system details were fully covered... NC 529 plan as well as NC 457 and Bailey designations.... Good job!
What's great about it: Concise, clear questions and instructions
What's not so great: I would like to capture some individual screens, ie, list of contributions made and the addresses.
