Love TT. Use it every year. Is there someway we can do a "dummy" tax return?? Want to estimate tax deductions for 2014 & possible make changes.
What's great about it: Detailed explanation of how the totals are gathered.
What's not so great: Can't go back as easily as I would like to correct or look at something.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments

state sales tax confusion
on March 12, 2014

Trying to enter the WA State sales tax was difficult. I passed over this item as I was doing the return with plans to return to it later. When I tried to enter the state data (only sales tax rate required) the program did not calculate the deduction allowed for non-income tax states. Going back to the return several days later the deduction showed up. Luckily, this saved me a call to TT to find out how to fool the program.
What's not so great: entering WA State sales tax deduction confusing

Had problems
on March 12, 2014

Called customer support (case #407390764) with problem that was also identified by the technician as a problem. He couldn't get it to run properly either.
Never got a fix to the issue or an explanation.
However, I was able the work around problem by altering inputs manually using forms mode. This was not a problem in previous years of using turbotax.
What's great about it: Generally software works okay
What's not so great: Foreign tax exclusion section does not work properly. There is a bug.

Turbo for 20+ years

I am a long time user of Turbo Tax and have seen it evolve wonderfully over the years. I have been using the Deluxe version to handle all of my needs, including a couple of simple Schedule Cs. The Help info has been complete and informative. I would like to see the question about major life changes (selling a home, moving, getting married (or divorced) and having a child) added back in. I would also like to see some of the information provided up front instead of after I enter lots of figures. For example, regarding medical expenses, please tell me right up front, based on revenue figures already entered, how much I would need in expenses to even bother entering them rather than waiting until I'm done and then telling me there's not enough for a deduction. I especially like the ability to save as a PDF. Even though I own Acrobat and don't need the feature, I think many people appreciate it. I had a need this year to find a figure from my 1999 return, which I have lost. I had to dig out the old software which, surprisingly, I didn't lose, and install it to be able to see the numbers. A PDF precludes that requirement. Maybe you could invent a program for printing old .tax files. That would be cool.
What's great about it: Step by step is thorough. When I showed my wife the level of detail, she decided we didn't need a tax guy after all.
What's not so great: This year it didn't ask the life-change questions, like "did you sell your home." I had to search out the form.
Pros: I moved
