TurboTax Makes Tax Time Fun
on March 12, 2014

I like to start on my return as I receive statements, etc., but it's hard to browse the items and do them out of order. Sometimes it's hard to find specific items that you worked on previously; e.g., to double check how you arrived at total for business expenses. Some topics are needlessly complicated; e.g., use of personal vehicle for occasional business use required answering many confusing questions. However, overall I LOVE TurboTax! It's great to be able to tweak what you've entered to correct mistakes or to add last minute info. As our tax situation has gotten more complicated, because of retirement, investments, and consulting income, doing the taxes has gotten easier!
What's great about it: Downloaded investment info allows TurboTax to create Form 8949 for me.
What's not so great: Hard to browse income & expense items out of order
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments

the continue or Yes/No buttons are not easily seen especially with LCD screens during daylight hours. Black bold letters for input or descriptions would make the program more user friendly for sunlight and visually impaired users. Even the "Review " section that I am typing in is not true black font on white background is difficult to see what I am typing. Secondly, why does the screen have so much blank area and yet you have to scroll down to find the "Continue" button. I have upgraded my monitor multiple times to larger screens but I still have to scroll down, I view more white blank area for no reason.
What's great about it: large fount
What's not so great: no contrast white letters with powder blue background

Could be improved

I've used the product for many years, so I like the fact that you submit personal information only once (and can easily change it if your situation changes) also the interview process lets you pick the forms that are unique to your situation. The whole process is very frustrating, however, that is due to the insane nature of the American IRS. Turbotax TRIES to make it simple, but the parameter of the IRS tax code are just crazy! This year, I had a lot of difficulty e-filing: Turbotax did not accept my name as spelled, no matter which way I spelled it. Also, the process to get a pin for you AND your husband, even though you know that only one of us is doing the work of finding every deduction and filing adds an unnecessary complication.. You have to find a better way to e-file. Using last yea'rs AGI was a smarter way to go: not every one has access to that information, and those who use Turbotax year after year are rewarded by importing last's year's return so they don't have to hunt for it. Avoid making the customer enter several times things that can be spelled differently (name with and without hyphens or accents, for example). I would like the possibility of printing all of my "supporting details"for every line: It would be of great use along the year, when some expenses recur, so that I would know immediately where to enter them. As is, I have to do a screen shot, copy it to Word, then print it. There should be an easier way. (I like the fact that the list of "supporting details"is imported in the next year's return. That helps some. I have done my taxes with Turbotax since 1970.
What's great about it: last year's info can be imported, math always right.
What's not so great: E-filing process cumbersome and capricious.

Was a wee bit leary of the outcome for last year since we had sold our home, but the process remained a snap!
What's great about it: The format is elementary.

Easy to enter information and the results were accurate.
The only issue I had this year was getting back to the Schedule C once I entered the information the first time. There are too many screens to go through and it is confusing which Yes or No got me to the main Expenses screen for the Schedule C.
Other than that it was great.
What's great about it: easy to follow and enter information
What's not so great: Had a hard time getting back to Schedule C after first entering information. Too many screens to go through.
