2013 Turbo Tax Review
on March 11, 2014
Posted by: SAPOrlando
Process is very straight forward and gets easier each year. Software should ask if all data is to be entered manually after the fist input verses trying to download from online sources.
What's great about it: Completed in less than 3 hours after getting all paper work together.
What's not so great: After manual entry of data keeps trying to go through auto download.

When did the charges for state preparation and filing begin and why? You are as bad as the airlines with add on charges.
What's great about it: Good System
What's not so great: Why charge for state when it has been free?

Turbo Tax should randomly select users and pay to have their tax completed by a tax professional to validate that Turbo Tax users are getting the max refund
What's great about it: easy to use - good explanation of info requirements
What's not so great: not confortable that I'm getting the maximum refund
Pros: I bought or sold investments

a couple of problems this year
on March 11, 2014

A 1099 misc form that we received from a gas company drilling on some land had both rent and royalty on the single 1099 form. Turbo Tax wouldn't accept both on the schedule E for that company. The "rent" was a "signing bonus". I had to combine the rent and royalty into one number and enter it as royalty. I was led to this solution after about 45 minutes of telephone help. Mass State tax problems. When TTax imported info from last year it had several places where it put a period after a middle initial in my name and my wife's name. I had to override the entries to remove the period after the initial. The state efile would not accept the override and it would not accept the "two characters" (initial plus period) as the middle initial. Thus unable to efile the state return. Other than those two problems the program worked well.
What's great about it: mostly easy to do except problems listed below
What's not so great: schedule E problems & Mass efile problems (had to abandon state e-file

I have been pleased with TT since I started using almost 10 yeas ago. I would do taxes manually then use program. When I program gained my confidence I now rely on it.
What's great about it: Ease of manipulating forms
