Turbo Tax Wins Again

I tried H&R Block software last year - big mistake. I expected the same degree of thoroughness and flexibility (step-by-step or form-only) as Turbo Tax but was disappointed. In all areas Turbo Tax was superior. Perhaps part of it is that I have used Turbo Tax since the days of DOS (that sure dates me) and I am comfortable with it. Even considering that, I am believe that someone using a tax preparation software package for the first time would find Turbo Tax by far easier to use. Not only would a brand-new user find Turbo Tax easier, he or she would also feel more confident that the return was done correctly.
The only criticism that I could make was with the details involving e-filing. The tax year before last (2011) I almost filed late because I did not know that I had not completed by e-filing. I got to the point of printing returns and thought that the filing was complete. Fortunately I caught the mistake before the deadline. Perhaps some type of flag to let the filer know that there are a few additional steps.

What's great about it: Great explanations, thorough step-by-step instructions, flexible, abundant prompts and cautions
What's not so great: Notice that electronic filing is complete or not
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments

Ok, I listed very comprehensive on Pros and Cons. This software is so very thorough and it has found additional deductions that I was not aware of. But the thorough nature requires a lot of additional questions. But everything is plain English, examples are given and both of my refunds were higher than I would have obtained with a paper form and a book!!
What's great about it: increased deductions, very comprehensive
What's not so great: very comprehensive (if higher refunds can be a "con")
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Great Program

I had some difficulty determining where to insert data from a partnership investment. Payment from this partnership was identified as a royalty by my broker so that is where I attempted to enter the data. I determined that this data was to be entered in the business section. I would recommend that you have a filter question for those who receive a Schedule K-1 Form 1065 so that they can be directed to the correct entry area.
What's great about it: Generally clear instructions and good guidance
What's not so great: Problem with Schedule K-1 Form 1065
Pros: I bought or sold investments

First time user - It was "easy-peasy"!

We highly recommend this product. It was not only easy to use, it helped me more than my accountant did. I found more deductions that he ever did.
What's great about it: Step by step directions walked me right through it
What's not so great: I only wish I had tried this year and many dollars ago.

With seven children and 2 in college, TurboTax helped me get our maximum deductions. It's questioning style and step-by-step format make it easy to file. I've used TurboTax for several years and have always felt confident of the results.
What's great about it: Quick and thorough
What's not so great: Didn't return me to exactly where I ended
