Peace of Mind with TurboTax
on March 11, 2014
Posted by: Gigilosbseshart
Once again using Turbo Tax has given me peace of mind. I was able to complete it a little faster this year because I knew what to expect after having used it for the past six years. This was a transitional year for me. I left one job, collected unemployment, turned 65 and began collecting small pensions. Also finally settled my Mom's estate. Luckily, Turbotax had it all covered. Since my income this year was somewhat reduced, I was able to take the standard deduction, which saved me a lot of time going through hundreds of checks, statements, and receipts.
What's great about it: Asked the right questions
What's not so great: Not clear whether live chat was FREE or not
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Thank heaven it's done

Overall, Turbo Tax is great. It is sometimes frustrating when I have to deal with things, like something is missing from a form and I don't know how to access the form. I can spend a lot of time spinning my wheels to make a correction.
What's great about it: The biggest help I receive is the ability to import financial information directly from the financial inst
What's not so great: I frequently run into small problems that I have trouble solving, even with helps provided.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Turbo tax is a great tool and gives me peace of mind when I am completing our federal and state taxes. Being computer savvy is a plus, but I think that even people who use the computer on a limited basis will find Turbo tax easy to use.
What's great about it: Guided Help
What's not so great: Would like to see the forms as I am working.

The program worked fine until it came time to e-file. The program would not transmit the files because it kept telling me I had to update the software. I did download the updates but it still gave me the same error over and over . Then is said if the problem persists file by mail!!! Ya Right !
What's great about it: asked the right questions
What's not so great: E file was a nightmare

Stubborn form

You continued to insist that I was in error by listing my pension fund payments as not taxable. Our church designates my pension as housing allowance. All nine thousand of it was used, plus some more. So none of it was taxable. I finally listed it as though $100 of it was taxable just so you would let me finish my taxes. However, this is now an error on the report. You have never seemed to do well with the parsonage allowance for ministers. I have almost always had trouble with you on this. I kinow that there are those who want to do away with it now, but it is still currently there. Why don't you make allowance for it on your ministerial returns?
What's great about it: Seem to do fairly well
What's not so great: Refused to accept my figures

I've been trying for 2 hours now to find out how to print my state return. Still haven't found the answer. I either get referred to a bunch of some other persons questions which don't apply to me or sent back to print my federal return which i have already done. The instructions are either very poor or non-existent. i guess i'll have to try google to find an answer. This is very frustrating. not really worth the money.
What's great about it: propagates info from prior years return
What's not so great: help function is terrible. State returns are worse. i had to calculate what income was taxable and what wasn't.

TurboTax gets the job done.
Ability to download 1099s from various financial institution and input directly into TurboTax is great.
Last year TurboTax included financial institution name and Fund name, this year it didn't, so had to manually input the data.
What's not so great: No check mark on 1099s to indicate "not state taxable"
