Makes Doing My Own Taxes Possible
on March 9, 2014
Posted by: 1HappyFella
I've been using Turbo Tax for over 10 years now, and never have been disappointed. The step-by-step interview process makes filing straightforward, and the import feature from last year's taxes help me get a "jump start" on the process. Also the import features like W2's and 1099's really speeds up an otherwise manual process. Thanks for being my favorite tax program!
What's great about it: Step-by-step process makes it nearly impossible to make a mistake or miss a step.
What's not so great: Skipping around between steps can sometimes be confusing.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Easy Peasey

I always dread doing my family's taxes. Once I load TurboTax, and get started I realize my dread is unfounded! Now if Turbo Tax would just pay the tax bill... Just kidding! This is my fourth year using TT, and I can't see using anything else.
What's great about it: Easy to use. Questions easily answered by the "Community". Made the payment to the IRS simple. Easy to install & use
What's not so great: Nothing
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Each year my satisfaction goes lower

Most annoyingly, when I closed it after I had completely entered all the data for a return and wanted to wait before filing, it closed WITHOUT SAVING THE RETURN! Then after I had re-entered all the data, the Oregon taxes due went down from the $2,582 I had jotted down the first time to only $1,010. I obviously like the latter better, but since I thought I had done everything right the first time (I had gone through the review process with no errors), I am left uncertain about the accuracy. Several areas of entry are also confusing, such as the form for medical expenses where it first says you have entered a total and then asks for a breakdown between joint filers that doesn't include a category for the long-term care premiums that were part of the original total. Entering a 1099-R that has the "Taxable Amount Not Calculated" box checked, it twice more asks that the taxable amount was: I WASN'T CALCULATED. Similarly, after choosing the RIC answer for income from foreign countries, it asks you to pick from a list (which itsn't there) of countries. And why suggest an IRA on a return that has no earned income?
What's great about it: I've done my taxes on TurboTax since 1998, so I am familiar with the software and it can transfer data over year to year
What's not so great: The calculations being made get less transparent each year and this year included several areas I thought were wrong.

I Swear by TurboTax
on March 9, 2014

Love TurboTax, used it for many years now. It's easy to use and I feel I get a thorough return for a fraction of what it would cost me to have a professional do it.
I ran into an issue this year with the child tax credit. I've always received this in years past. It had been good for a couple thousand dollars, last year it was scaled back to a few hundred dollars. This year, the software entered ZERO.
The help screens only indicated the criteria by which a child qualifies yo for a credit. Although I had one child age out of the credit, I had others that still met the criteria.
With no clear reason why my credit was zeroed out, I had to reach out to the help community where I finally got the response that answered my question. As it turns out, my income had risen to a level the caused my to lose eligibility.
I understand the criteria, but it was not clear from the inforamtion returned from the TT software. It would have been helpful if there was a statement to the effect that the credit is phased out at certain income levels, and as a result, you're not eligible for the credit this year.
What's great about it: Easy To Use; State return takes 5 minutes
What's not so great: Child Tax Credit Section

1099G
on March 9, 2014

Turbo Tax should include the option of receiving a paper copy 1099G next year instead of an electronic version. I want it filed with my return and it's the states responsibility to send to me.
