Great product

I love Turbotax and have been using it for years. That being said, I refuse to pay to submit my taxes. Therefore I always e-file the Federal return and mail my state return as there is a fee to e-file the state return. This year I found it a little challenging to get back to the place to mail rather than e-file my state taxes. The software didn't automatically prompt me when I finished with my federal return.
What's great about it: Thorough and easy to use
What's not so great: A little tricky when it comes to filing the old fashioned way

on March 5, 2014
Posted by: a2sh3ton
I had a difficult time finding where to list the total amount of tax money that I paid for my quarterly tax payments.
I could not find how to print out the forms for my estimated tax payments for 2014.
What's not so great: No printout of 1040-Est`

Great work every year. Wrote my own program years ago, but got tired of updating it every year. Yours has all the forms I need also,.
What's great about it: Easier every year, always up to date, better than the program I wrote myself years ago.
What's not so great: None. Superior product.

TTax is OK, even some fun, but can still improve
on March 5, 2014

I switched to TurboTax in the 1980s after running my own spreadsheets for several years, and then trying several brands of commercial programs. I’ve found TTax to be sprightly, fun (for a tax program!), and usually quite helpful, and I’ve never found a calculation error in it. I can fill it out with faith that the invisible calculations will yield a correct result. TTax has a very user-friendly step-by-step mode that I enjoy, and the actual forms are always available if I want to see how something looks or if I want to fill out a tax form directly instead of using the step-by-step method. The final printed copy for mailing is always very well done.
TTax is often short on “feedback” capabilities. In the lengthy task of filling things out, I often find “opportunities for improvement”, but sending those to Intuit is always difficult or impossible. They need a feedback key, perhaps a “special function key” on one’s keyboard, that could be used on EVERY page seen on one’s screen, both its instructions and the step-by-step forms and pages. That feedback module could capture the web page being seen, so Intuit would know what was being referred to.
For my state forms, TTax is not as thorough in its explanations and perhaps in how it sets up or allows special circumstances. I’ve not found it programmed to show my state’s instruction booklets, either, which I sometimes want to consult. Perhaps doing that for every state would be too expensive for Intuit, I don’t know. But as far as they go, the state forms for my state seem to have the right calculations – just sometimes the user does not know which options to choose for a particular answer.
Last year I tried to file electronically for the first time and was rejected due to an error in my birthdate which apparently originated with the Soc. Security System. TTax guided me to trying to correct that, but this year’s TTax cannot check out before filing if the SS datum has in fact been properly corrected to let me file electronically. It needs a module for that, I suggest.
In summary, I like TurboTax and recommend it. It is sort of fun to use, it is accurate, and it does a good job of assembling and printing the results of all that tedious data entry. Its main problem is deficient provisions for offering feedback suggestions on individual screens.
What's great about it: Hand holding AND forms images both are good
What's not so great: Poor provision for feedback on individual pages, some inadequate explanations
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Very Good But
on March 5, 2014

While the program is very good overall I am very disappointed in the way Intuit quietly removed features from their regular program and created a tiered system with multiple version and multiple prices. I feel doing this surreptitiously was a disservice to its customers but it sure helped Intuit's bank account.
What's great about it: Very good program, Improved question Format
What's not so great: Features quietly removed from program

Filing Taxes with Turbo for the first time
on March 5, 2014

Good experience - no problems encountered. Was a little confused when a statement came up that forms were not ready from the government but in a day or two, that was done. Went back to file and all was ready to be filed and wow - all done and filed!! All direct and simple questions to help file - if I can do it, anyone can!! Will do this every year from now on...
What's great about it: It was easy and quick
What's not so great: I didn't realize it would cost to file the state part
