Used TurboTax for years
on March 5, 2014
Posted by: BarbieJoan
I have used TurboTax for many years. I once worked as a tax preparer. I have found the calculations very easy to use and accurate. The final check is very helpful. However, in 2013 my husband died and TurboTax did not let me file the proper form of HC required by the state of Massachusetts for him so I had to file by mail. The software claimed that I did not have to file an HC for him because he was deceased but the state requires me to do so and rejected my efile submission no matter how I changed form. I tried several times. I was charged to efile the state and hope that I can get a refund. However, I really like TurboTax and will continue to use the software in the future.
What's great about it: Turbo tax is very easy to use.
What's not so great: For the firstr time the software had an error

PA Return confusing
on March 5, 2014

The Pennsylvania forms were challenging for my situation. I had hoped for a better explanation by TurboTax.
What's great about it: The Fed & NJ return was okay.
What's not so great: The PA filing forms were slightly confusing.

Refinements eased the process and convenience is exemplary. I'll purchase again next year.
What's great about it: Better explanations than prior years.
What's not so great: Glonky e-filing -- kept asking for updates but none were available. Did NOT want to paper file. HSA section unclear.

State of CT instructions re Fed IncomeSubtractions
on March 5, 2014
Posted by: ProActiveUser
The following suggestion for improvement relates to the Connecticut tax return preparation:
I became confused with the instructions regarding subtractions to reported federal income. One screen stated that Social Security benefits (should clarify "benefits" by including the word "income") must be reported as a subtraction to reported federal income. However, Turbo Tax had already populated the correct field in another section of the tax return. I took the instruction literally and entered my social security income on the screen that directed me to do so; Specifically on line 10a on the worksheet named ""Other Subtractions 'Statement Sub1'"). I made a similar error regarding the CT State tax refund on the same input screen related to "subtractions to federal income" using line 10b. These errors, on my part, could have been avoided with more precise instructions by Turbo Tax. A simple statement indicating that Turbo Tax had addressed the issue elsewhere; i.e. within the Social Security Benefit Adjustment worksheet) would have assisted my understanding. My errors cost me several hours of research to finally figure out my misunderstanding.
BTW no one responded to my search for help on the issue using Turbo Tax' "Community" outreach service.
What's great about it: Turbo Tax Takes care of all the math!
What's not so great: Poor instructions for State of CT input screens

This is my second year of using TT and it is really user friendly. The only reason I needed to call in this year was because I had tax law questions and was not sure why the refund status did not show what I was reading.
What's great about it: Easy step by step for those who have not filed their own taxes before.
What's not so great: There are some areas that the help or explanation area does not answer.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
