Problems with Turbo Tax
on March 3, 2014
Posted by: Chiefgeorge
The program appeared to have a glitch because it would not e=file until I zeroed out entry in the Schedule F and vehicle expense form that was not valid this year. It was confusing and concerning. It finally transmitted.
What's great about it: It allows you to do you taxes at home.
What's not so great: Even though I had no Farm Income and indicated so, the program keep trying to force form entries in Schedule F .
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I moved

VERY easy w/ ONE suggestion

This was our second year using Turbo Tax Deluxe. I will continue to buy this software again next year.
What's great about it: Easy to understand and answer questions to complete returns.
What's not so great: Should be asked the addresses of Donation organizations when entering information, not a separate step.

Usability

If you are under $100,000 a year gross, I would not spend the extra $$ on the Deluxe package unless you have a ton of deductions (more that 25%+ of gross). Generally I would give the program a rating of 85 to 90% for usability, layout, and maybe another 5% for effectiveness.
What's great about it: Fairly easy to use.
What's not so great: Not very easy to get back to last years 6 digit IRS PIN #.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

2013 taxes

As usual, Turbo tax makes it almost a pleasure to fill out taxes. It makes you wonder why so many people waste their money on tax professionals. I've been using Turbo Tax since it started, I don't know how many years ago.
So, now my gripes -- it looks like Turbo tax is getting lazy:
1. On pages longer than 1 screen, you have to scroll down before pressing CONTINUE or NEXT. OK its picky, but you should put another NEXT button at the top.
2. When you file and have Foreign Assets, there's no reminder to file the extra forms and when printing, there's no 8938 -- you have to search for it under forms. It was there last year.
3. NY State is incomplete for another year -- the IT-241 is missing and I have to file manually again. Grrrrr!!! Though this may be NY's fault.
What's great about it: Good, fast, and easy user interface
What's not so great: Sloppy scrolling, poor foreign assets, incomplete NY State

If you are paying someone to do your tax return, you are wasting your hard-earned money. TurboTax does it for you with easy step by step directions. You can't go wrong with TurboTax.
What's great about it: It's so easy, you're 5th grader could do it.
What's not so great: There's not a single think not to like.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

TurboTax Review by AML

Specifically too much data is requested by TT to enter charitable contribution data. I am an experienced tax preparer and this type of data is not required by the IRS in a submission of a tax return. It may be beneficial to the taxpayer to maintain the detail off line but in no way is it required in a submission. Why can't TT just have a transaction worksheet in the system to record charitable contriubtion data which would significantly speed up the entering of this data.
Also I entered non cash donations into "It's Deductible" and get the amount that is valued. However when I download the information into TT I get a different amount. I am told that this is because TT has revalued the items. I am at a complete loss as to why this is done.
What's great about it: Interactive ease in entering data
What's not so great: Handling of charitable contributions
