Used TaxSlayer last year, but had some changes this year and wanted a little more guidance. Turbo tax walked me through each credit and deduction step by step. After doing a trial run of my taxes on TaxSlayer, both amounts were about the same. However, when it came time to actually e-file my return, it took a while. It said the forms were not ready to check for updates. I ran the updates and it still would not file. There were no more updates so I signed out and back in....still wouldn't e-file. I had to restart my computer before the e-file would work.
What's great about it: Walks you through each step
What's not so great: Time Consuming
Pros: I moved

State

Past years' software allowed a step-by-step questions for the state #MA# return. Now it does not go through step by step over all possible deductions. It goes straight to the review and filing. I was doing a return where there was rental expense. The federal questions asked if I was a home owner; the answer was no. However, no where did it ask if there was a rent question. Luckily, I went into the forms to locate that information. There was a difference from a $35 refund to a $190 refund. I would like to see the step-by-step questions for the state return as well be brought back.
What's great about it: using turbotax for years
What's not so great: no step-by-step questions on state returns

Piece of Cake Tax Prep

I had almost no problems completing the taxes this year. TurboTax helped me knock out my taxes in under 2 hours, including the download update and completion of filing for both Federal and State. Only knock I have for this year was with my investments and the messages that Intuit was updating records, but at the end an update was available that cleared that up. Maybe consider asking to do an update in the beginning to prevent any concerns.
What's great about it: Step by step guidance through the process
What's not so great: A couple of questions were confusing
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments

Got tired of paying accountants and services. Even though you have to pay for state e-filing, its still much cheaper than any of the major tax filing services
What's great about it: Simple to use
What's not so great: None
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Updates initially caused mac to crash. Once that issue was resolved then I was unable to file returns electronically. Just may be time to switch products for future years.
What's not so great: Worst year ever after 10 years of using product

After the user enters all the data from their 1099s (dividends, qualified dividends, capital gains, etc.), the effect this has on the Fed tax should be briefly explained to the user. I kept looking up the tax in the tax Table based on the taxable income listed on Form 1040 and it was significantly higher than what TurboT was listing. The reason for the lower tax was evident on the Qualified Dividends and Capital Gain Tax Worksheet which wasn't apparant until after everything was filed. TT should give one of their pop-up comments by line 44 of the Form 1040 entitled "why is the tax not the same as listed in the Tax Tables?". The pop-up would explain that some of the dividends and/or capital gains which are a portion of line 43 (taxable income) are not taxed or are taxed at a lower rate.
What's great about it: Fairly easy to walk through and go back when needed
What's not so great: Give more info on tax effect of capital gains & qualified dividends
