Helpful Suggestions/additions to Turbo Tax
on March 2, 2014

1)any write in comments needed in line spaces before $ entry if entered on form negate electronic filing;
2)if efile federal return but choose to wait to file state, Turbo T does not auato return to complete that process once federal efile completed or when return to TT at later time
3)data entry for long term care insurance "income/reimbursement" does not ask for date policy issued. If prior to 1997 exempts policy from taxation and "o" should be then entered on 1040, line 21 auto.
What's great about it: great, other than misses noted in review
What's not so great: See review section below

I have been using TT since 2006 and continue to find it fast and efficient. I hate doing taxes and TT makes it relatively painless!
What's great about it: software very user friendly
What's not so great: none

Have used it for years. It's accurate, safe, and it checks everything to ensure every possible deduction is considered and accounted for.

Deluxe ok but more flaws than last year
on March 2, 2014

This was my second time using Turbo Tax Deluxe and this year's edition was very similar to last year's, so the learning curve was much shorter.
It picked up all of last year's information, which saved a decent amount of time because I had less questions to answer. And, for the most part, it's still a very user friendly interface.
This year, however, I ran into a couple of headaches I hadn't thought I would need to. The e-filing was a bit of a hassle because the validation server apparently was overworked and wouldn't allow me to send. It even said I probably would have to send it by mail. Luckily, I tried again myself the next day and it went through.
The most egregious error was on the NYS return. Pension funds through the state are tax excluded, but the software did not acknowledge that. It didn't even offer to ask if it should be excluded. As a result, it told me I had to pay $1,086 in tax. Thank god I'm not a total doofus and looked over the return before I went to e-file.
When I saw the mistake, I couldn't figure out how to correct it. I went to the help center, and found another poor soul who had found the same issue and told us how to get around it. As a result, I will receive a $328 refund. That's a $1,400 swing in my financial fortunes.
So, when this product tells you everything has been checked for accuracy, don't believe it. This is a very big problem since that is one of the supposed major benefits cited in all their marketing literature. Be wary and consider other brands.
What's great about it: picked up last year's information, added several things I wouldn't have thought of
What's not so great: NYS software missed a major exclusion, original validation server didn't allow sending on first try
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Another year's IRS returns done by myself.

This is my 10th year using TURBO TAX and as in years before it was simple, no surprises and thorough to my complete satisfaction. The next best thing would be a complete abandonment of the IRS tax code.
What's great about it: very complete
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Easy to use BUT

The experience as usual was easy. The navigation through the process was relatively error free. I did detect two problems while using TurboTax. The first was when I tried to enter deductions. It initially went to the Schedule K-1 screen. The second time was while doing the NY State taxes. When trying to look at the Long Term Insurance calculation, it also went to the Schedule K-1 screen.
What's great about it: Easy to use and navigate for the most part
What's not so great: There were two problems I detected

Easy to use - only one problem
on March 2, 2014

Easy to use, accurate, only issue were an item from box 12, and one from box 14 were doubled. I had downloaded my w-2 this year - so deleted that and entered manually to fix. Not a big issue, but glad I saw it before I filed.
What's great about it: Easy, took info from prior year, intuitive
What's not so great: for some reason 2 items from from W-2s where doubled......
