Excellent way to file taxes
on February 28, 2014

Even though I have used TurboTax for years (including back to when it was Parsons) I like to have it take me completely through each and every section to make sure that I don't miss something in addition to continuing changes in the tax code(s).
What's great about it: Easy to follow step by step
What's not so great: Besides hating to file taxes period nothing :-)

2013 Tax Process Review
on February 28, 2014

I have used Turbo Tax for many years -- it truly has been very helpful in getting both my Federal and State taxes done.
What's great about it: Easy to use -- covers all the bases
What's not so great: For the price, I feel the State filing should be free.

A few glitches, but good product
on February 28, 2014

Used turbo tax once many years ago when it first came out, but did not feel at that time it was worth the money as it was not very user friendly. That has improved greatly. Walks you through from beginning to end. I run a MAC OS 10.9.2. I had a number of (frustrating) software problems such as not being able to update program (required) to get all available forms, etc. Also at the very end, my first couple attempts to e-file were denied due to "not having all available updates" even though I had finally updated shortly before and no other updates were available. All of these update problems were resolved by closing out program/restarting computer many times throughout the process. Taxes are done/filed....All OK now.
What's great about it: User friendly. Simplified the tax process. Much easier than interpreting the 1040 instructions the government provides.
What's not so great: Software glitches

would be very useful as a planning tool if there was a pro-forma tool for following year's tax return.
What's great about it: easy to use, much improved with import capabilities
What's not so great: not easy to always see where an item is entered on tax return

Completing Forms using Easy Step by Step Method
on February 28, 2014

I have noticed that TurboTax sometimes asks for a hand entry into a specific form because it indicates that the data was missing when using the Step by step method - which I use every year even though I have been using TurboTax forever (even when it was MacinTax).
This a bit frustrating and even mysterious because it is usually data that was already inputted during the data entry process (or is on previous year return which was accessed in the beginning of the process as a guide for current year) and when it does this it shows you a partial form and a highlighted box but there is no explanation as to why it was "missed" and what the form is all about. Since my returns at this point in life are relatively simple it seems to me that TurboTax should 1. Not miss transferring data from previous entries or previous return, and 2. If it's going to highlight a open box for missing info., jump to the full page view of the form and have a brief explanation cartoon style bubble indicating what is missing and where user would likely find that information. i.e., continue the "guided" information requests and explanation vs. just dumping the user to an incomplete form and a highlighted box.
Also, when e-filing, the program highly recommends making a Review Print before e-filing (which we did ) and then also STRINGLY pushes the user to print a Filing Copy after e-file process which is just a waste of paper and ink.
TurboTax doesn't seem to allow for the fact that a review copy was already printed (shouldn't it ask user if it did the Review printing?) which included all the forms, explanations and directions for e-filing
Also, I receive pre-printed quarterly filing forms for Federal and State (IN) and by sheer chance I got into the Forms mode and found the box that prevented TurboTax from printing all the quarterly coupons which had happened in all previous filings and were a waste.. I think TurboTax should ask the User to indicate whether or not they want the Quarterly filing coupons printed - and why they may not want them. e.g., "Did you received pre-printed Federal Quarterly Deposit Coupons?" and ask the same question for State (or states).
What's great about it: Usually fills in all forms completely & correctly
What's not so great: Sometimes asks for data already entered in some form during the checking and review process.

Some Concerns for 2013
on February 28, 2014
Posted by: 231319
I have used Turbotax for many years and rely on the product to provide accurate tax information and calculations. This year, however, my tax product was deficient in a number of ways, delaying my filing by a month and making me wonder if I am getting my full refund. My usual high expectations were shaken this year, but in the end, Turbotax fixed the bugs (at least the ones I found) and the process caused me to be more careful about reviewing my forms before I submitted. I still prefer using Turbotax, but I hope they will provide a better product next year.
What's great about it: Turbotax keeps track of my past returns so I don't have to re-enter things; the format is easy to use
What's not so great: Errors in the state product delayed my filing

Form 4835 to provide expenses for farm rental could not be completed in the step by step process, but had to be completed in form mode. Help feature was not helpful, as it did not line up well with the CD TT Deluxe version
What's great about it: All forms were available and pulling in last years data was great
What's not so great: Form 4835 could not be completed in the step by step process
