Great picture quality

I've used this camera for about a month. The picture quality is short of professional cameras. If you watch HD TV and then switch to this cam you will notice that it's actually better than the TV. Another great feature is the DIGIC DV III Image Processor. This chip is amazing! The Smart Auto is exactly what Canon is advertising: very fast renders the best picture settings on Auto. Very powerful chip and software together with the image sensor make for a amazing camera! Low light quality is also extraordinary. Objects appear very very clear. Put all this together with a very cool design and attention to detail make this a great product. Far exceeds my (high) expectations! Congratulations Canon, keep it up!

Good Weekend Video Cam

Overall, I’m pleased with the HF M40 Camcorder. I use it primarily to record my son’s youth football games. And it does a good job in SP AUTO mode. Only plays are recorded therefore a two hour game is condensed down to about 150 plays and 30 minutes of film. While the camera does a good job recording the action, the bundled software is horrible and lacking in my opinion. I need to stream the plays (scenes) into one length of film, which is distributed to the players and coaches. The software can only handle 99 in a sequence. Therefore I have to manually group scenes into first and second halves which can take a couple hours to combine the scenes. I need software that can easily combine ALL the scenes on the flash drive and provide output files in ALL of the popular video formats. Please understand, I’m a weekend football dad, not a film editing expert. An excellent camcorder I give 5 stars, but very poor bundled software which I only give 1 star. Let’s face it, the camera can be excellent, but if there is only poor software supporting it, then the camera is useless.

Great Camera but bundled software from Pixela is terrible. I would not recommend this product because of the bundled software.
Pros: Compact Design, excellent image quality
Cons: Difficult Computer Connectivity, Limited Software Compatibility
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Two years of use

I bought this primarily to get High Def shots of Christmas Lights since I do an animated display. Christmas Lights are tough on the Dynamic Range of any camera. If I go to Manual, set the focus to manual and set the exposure to -1.75 or -2.0 then I can get better than average shots.
Now, the format. Saves in AVCHD. I've heard that editing on a Mac is difficult - wouldn't know, but editing in Adobe Premiere Elements 12 is a snap and also in Adobe Premiere CS6 (wasn't in CS5).
Pros: Fast auto-focus, Super-sharp images
