This machine works well in general. Colors look good, speed is okay, generally acceptable. It is not good at printing envelopes. It ruins envelopes to the point that I would be embarrassed to send them out. Also, what they do not mention anywhere is that if you don't buy genuine Brother replacement toner cartridges, you cannot remove the "Low Toner" warning that appears on the screen. This would not be too bad except that you cannot make a copy while this warning in on the screen. I finally figured out that if you open the front cover and close it again, the warning will go away just long enough to make one copy. So, you can only make a copy if you open the front cover every single time you want to copy something. Truely a pain and efficiency killer! Yes, I can and will have to buy the genuine Brother toner cartridges to make my machine work correctly, however, they are about 25% higher priced than compatible toner cartridges. I have several other Brother products in our office and none of them have this new issue. Just fair warning when trying to anticipate actual expenses when buying this machine, price geniune Brother cartridges. In my opinion, this will make me look at a different product line in the future as I am very unimpressed.

better than the 9840

After my MFC 9840 kept wearing out drums, i upgraded to the 9970. This machine is a lot easier to use and much faster as well. The only downside is the toner usage, the included toner ran out much too soon. Still a great bargain for color/double sided print scan/fax....

Worst experience ever.

The only reason that I am giving you 1 star is because I cant go any lower.
Lousy printer. Bought it in August of 2012. The fuser crapped out in July of 2013, just before the warranty was up. The customer service was terrible. It took a day to get a tech out to look at it. He then had to order a part which took another day. Once the part arrived it took him about 4 hours to "repair" my machine, and the fix didn't work. He then told me that 75% of the time these repairs do NOT work and they end up having to replace the printer. All in all I was without a printer for a full work week.
So the printer was replaced and for a while I was happy. Yesterday the printer they gave me as a replacement had the same problem. After going through the usual lousy Brother customer service help line, what I finally found out was that Brother refuses to stand behind their product because it is "no longer under warranty"; even though it was their replacement machine that crapped out for the second time in less than a year.
I will never buy another Brother product. And, I intend to tell everyone who will listen about my experience.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I am happy with the machine. Duplex scanning and printing. Good color quality. My only suggestion/complaint is that toner quantity is not monitored. I need to print a four page report to see how much toner is remaining.
My best suggestion to you is to make toner monitoring part of the Control Center, so it can be seen from the computer screen.

very useful machine

We have been using this in our 8 person office for about 6 weeks. Very impressed so far. Printing is clear and bright, paperless fax is easy and fast. First document is slow, as other reviewers mentioned, but printing is very quick after that. Scanning is Excellent! I've never had a scanner that could produce such high quality this quickly. Set up was a little fussy.

Excelent printer

This printer is far better than any ink jet printers we have ever owned. It turns on and is ready to print much faster than any ink jet printer and also prints pages much faster. Our only difficulty with this product is that toner cartridges are not locally obtainable.

Brother USA came thru

We purchased a new Brothers MFC-9970CDW printer and we had problems with it from the start. A certified technician was sent by Brother and parts were replaced but still no luck. Brother sent a replacement and it is working perfectly! We really like the "Scan to PC" feature the most. It prints fast and the employees are happy with the new printer. I am very pleased with this product and look forward to many years of usage.

Awesome Printer, INCREDIBLE support

We recently purchased this printer for our small office, and I just can't say enough about it. It's fast, reliable, and has a very intuitive interface. We operate with Mac OS Lion, which can be difficult with many products. However this printer offers full functionality for Mac OS. I did have some issues setting up the scan functions and each time I called Tech Support, I received immediate help from knowledgeable, real live people and they solved every issue with a smile. TOP NOTCH SERVICE, virtually unheard of these days. I don't normally write reviews, but I just have to share this experience! Kudos, Brother!
