Seriously Beautiful Picture and TV
on April 26, 2014

Great TV at an unbelievable price (for the quality of this TV).
I shopped hard for a new TV to put in our new house as the main "Movie Night" TV. I wanted a 4K set, but after looking at the 990s along side the 4K's at the Sony store, I honestly thought the pictures were indistinguishable from 8 feet and farther (I also felt the viewing angle on the curved set was a little better).
The Sales rep was pushing hard for the 4K models (and virtually all the models has big price cuts) but I couldn't take my eye off the 990, and considering I negotiated an extremely good deal (cash and no delivery needed) I walked out with the curved beauty.
Picture was spectacular out of the box, and the speakers are great (for TV speakers). The black levels during games and programming are especially good - I have not had the black level uniformity issue that some reviewers are mentioning. I wanted a Sony for the low latency in game mode - but the slight curve turned out to be really immerse and an unexpected bonus. My enjoyment level for both FPS's and racing games has been bumped up a couple of notches and I really can't imagine a better gaming TV - at least until 4K is supported on consoles.
Pros: Great looking, best non-4K picture you can get, two remotes, 4 sets of 3D glasses, wide viewing angles (counter intuitive considering its a curved TV), good speakers and an almost perfect TV for gamers. Great $/ quality ratio.
Cons: Glossy screen = not good in rooms where you don't have control over bright lights/reflections.

I like it!

I've only had the TV for a couple of weeks and really enjoy it. The picture was terrific right out of the box and the sound is great. I was fortunate because I already had a 75 inch media center that could hold this unit. Very easy set up and I'm running everything through my AV system and am connected to a wired LAN. Again the picture is perfect...I have not calibrated it.
The screen is glossy and does refect considerable light during the day even with the blinds closed...I don't usually watch movies during the day so it's not much of a problem...The blacks are true and the colors are amazing.
It comes with two remotes - like I really need another remote. The primary remote is simple to use and intuitive. I've used the Sony Entertainment Network and it's ok but I find ROKU 3 more orgainized and easier to navigate. I am still trying to figure out the browser. It seems very limited and does not bring up many internet pages...still working on that. I bought a seperate remote keyboard.
TV and movie watching is great - just not during the day! I still give this unit 5 stars.

Failed attempt

I had to write a review for this one to help bring the 5 star rating down a bit to a more realistic level. For the other 5 star ratings, nothing against your reviews. Glad you were able to luck out and get a great set. Mine however is a very mixed bag. The curved screen is cool and the viewing angles do appear to be improved. However, the screen uniformity is awful. I'm not the only one with the same issues. There are others (see avforum) who have had the same clouding and flashlighting issues I have experienced. The blacks are definitely not black on my set but rather deep treys at best. No amount of adjusting seems to help. Even after going through several phones calls and emails with Sony to improve, nothing helped the picture improve. Sony would not send a tech to look into the issues but rather had the response that the issues I am experiencing are common to LED TVs, and they therefore would not attempt to fix anything. This set is being returned to them for a full refund. Back to the hunt once more. So frustrating.
I have also tried out the 65W850A, which had some problems in certain months of manufacturing and I got a few bad ones. I can say, however, that the picture on the 65W850A easily rivals this set, however, I prefer the S990 due to passive 3D. Still, with both having issues, I have not yet found the perfect set for me. The passive 3D is great on this set, but extremely overemphasizes all the flaws in the picture uniformity.
Happy hunting. Again, if you can get a "good one" of these without all the clouding/uniformity issues like some of the other 5 stars on here, this really is a stellar TV. Unfortunately, buyer beware - you are rolling the dice.

Brilliant Design, New angle, BUT DIE IN 2 YEAR
on April 19, 2014

Came across this TV recently in a local store. It was brilliant and captured my attention right away. This TV is definitely the new trend coming. Almost made the purchased that day for a TV in my family room. Luckily, my 3series BMW was too small to stuff this inside at the time. When I got home, I was shocked to find out my Sony KDL46HX820 that I purchased in January, 2012 started developing vertical lines. The next morning, the entire screen was covered with vertical lines. Contacted Sony and their representative return with a reply of a few possible solution, but none of them work.
BTW this is part of their reply: "Despite the precautions taken during the course of design and production, as well as quality assurance, no manufacturer can completely eliminate potential component failure. We can only hope that your faith in Sony products be restored."
It is basically telling you that you're screwed, go get another Sony that will FAIL soon after the warranty ends. Overall, I would buy this TV if I am planning to throw this out after two years of use. Otherwise, I would look into some other brand. Everyone in my family has been a loyal fan dating back to my father's first radio cassette player. But sorry Sony we're moving away from your brand, and I'm also making a good effort to keep others informed before they have to feel my pain.
