It's a great printer! It's easy to set up and I'm usually not the one setting up any devices here at home. The copies are clearer and faster to print!

Has not come very far in ten years.

My wife and I bought a Brother MFC about 10 years ago. It still works (mostly, some problems led to buying this one). The printing on this one is fast and good quality. The wireless ability is also great.
Negatives: Brother has not improved the interface in ten years. You still set up the time and date using the one line LCD on the machine. Hello, it's 2011, write an app. or let me open an interface on my computer like most of the wireless routers have had for ten years. Create a decent interface that lets me set up everything within a program: date, information on fax pages, answer mode, etc. and then hit "save" to apply it.
Also, when Steven Colbert makes jokes about not being able to set up his wireless printer, you can be darn (brother won't let me say the other word) sure they are too hard to use. Impossibly hard. I am very tech savvy and it took me two hours, a lot of luck, and a lot of trial and error to get it set up. The instructions are worthless tech jargon that no one but our IT guy at work would understand. I still have not figured out if I can scan or fax wirelessly because there is no decent manual.
I could go on. The hardware itself is great. The interface (at all levels) is terrible.
I recommended my old Brother MFC to dozens of people, including 100 or more students over the years. This latest one is just the same printer from 2002 in a black box. I am unlikely to recommend it over any other brand. I am really disappointed that the interface has not improved in all this time. What are you spending you time on? The device does the same thing now as ten years ago and not much faster. It doesn't look any cooler. It is no smaller. What have you done for the last ten years in R&D? Hire some new people.

unsuitable for office use

This machine may be ok for home use -- small footprint and light weight -- but it is unsuitable for the demands of even a small office. The manual feed tray takes only one sheet at a time, and you need to keep adjusting the width of the slot if you have envelopes, etc. Repeated "paper jam" messages when there is no paper jam. Both the scanning glass and the paper tray accommodate only letter size paper, not legal. The control buttons are small, autodial memory is small, operation is noisy, and overall it feels flimsy. I bought this when my MFC 8840D died. This is a much less substantial machine.

Great device for black & white duplex all in one. Easy to install, excellent and quick print, scan, fax, copy. Keeps working without problems. Tech assistance, if necessary is very good. Can't beat the price.

Easy set up. Have not connected network yet. Fast, quiet even from power off mode. Home use only, still have original toner shipped with unit. My church has this printer also with more use than mine, about 1 year now with no complaints.

A great fit

The printer itself works great; it's a perfect size for a small office. We're wireless, using both a MacPro and a Sony Vaio Netbook. Installation requires knowing your network's passwords and codes. We needed help from a tech-saavy relative (who can't even change a tire). My Netbook & printer needed about an hour to finally accept each other. Now all is well; copy quality is ok & everything works.

I've had the brother MFC-7860 for a few weeks now and am very happy with it. I've been using a brother 4800 series MFC for about five years now. I bought the original because I wanted a laser printer, automatic duplexing, and low-cost toner. The original delivered all that. I got a terrific deal on it as it was a refurbished model, but couldn't tell it from brand-new. It has worked flawlessly since I bought it.
A while back I purchased a new laptop with Windows 7. I couldn't get the software for the older brother to work on my Windows 7 laptop. Time to buy a new printer.
One thing was a must-have and that was automatic duplexing. Another feature that I really wanted was a wireless connection. I got both with the MFC 7860DW. Another feature that was at the top of my list was low-cost toner. The toner for this model is a little bit higher in cost than my old one, but not a deal killer, it's still reasonable.
Installation was relatively simple though a little more complex than installing your average printer. Wireless connectivity though was a little more complicated than my inkjet printer. With my inkjet there's a menu choice that says "connect". I then enter my password code, push okay and everything is done. With my new laser there are quite a few more steps involved, making things somewhat more complicated. Not a big deal if you only do it once, but it becomes quite a hassle if you have to do it on a regular basis, as I did. The unit kept dropping the connection if the unit wasn't regularly used. I may be gone several days at a time and upon returning home would have to reconnect the printer. However I discovered my laptop was doing the same thing. The issue apparently was in the router, as I tweaked some settings and haven't had an issue since. I have two desktops and a laptop and they all work fine with the new printer.
These unit does what it's supposed to do..... Clean crisp text, flawless duplexing, and fast printing. I haven't really had a chance to use the other features such as scanning, and faxing. What few things I have scanned I've been very pleased with.
All in all I am quite happy with this unit. Simply put it does what it's supposed to do. It's also an attractive piece of equipment. One thing I have noticed though it is quite a bit quieter than my old laser MFC. With the old one I could sit in any room and hear it printing, with the new one I have to get up and physically check the machine. This should please a lot of people as one of the complaints I have heard on the Brother MFC's is the noise. This one makes less noise in my inkjet.
Would I recommend this to a friend, definitely. Based on my experience with Brother I will receive many years of service from this unit. If you're looking for a full-featured laser MFC at a reasonable cost this unit is it.

Really like this printer

I purchased this printer to replace a laser printer I have been using since 1994. I'm not sure this printer will last for 18 years but so far I am VERY pleased with it's performance. I was really interested in the copying and scanning functions. The faxing is not very important to me so I cannot comment on that and that is my reason for only 4 stars. The software was easy to download into my desktop and laptop. I have used the printer for a couple months with no problems.
