This is the worst can opener I have ever seen.

I have had a spacemaker can opener for 12 plus years and I have enjoyed it and loved it. However, I had to replace it due to a part that broke off. Needless to say, a part is no longer available nor is the same can opener. So I bought the only one available now. It is no comparison to my old one. The cut is jagged and pieces of medel shavings fall into the can of food while opening it. It was also exstremely difficult to mount. I bought not only one,but two, thinking I had just gotton a bad one, but the second one was no better than the first. Now I have two, to take back. Not Happy at all :(

I've had a B&D SpaceMaker can opener for years and it finally broke. I thought I'd replace it with the same brand. It's very cheaply made and the front cover keeps falling open. I needed it to open larger cans and it barely opens standard size ones. I would not buy again and will not recommend it.

Thiis is a poor design
You have to mount this can opener so the front door proturdes forward of the cabinet or the piercing lever will not rotate fully and even if it did you
could not get your fingers on it.My wife did not like that it stuck out 1.25" from the front of the cabinet because she was afraid if something
fell while taking it out of the cabinet it could break the can opener
We never used it- We just returned it-so I can't comment on its operation
As a side note our old can opener Black & Decker cat# EC600 type 1 was excellent. You could mount it under the cabinet flush to the front
and all controls were easy to use. Installations was easier as it came with
a plastic pattern instead of a paper one
We have had the old can opener around 10 years and the plastic lever
finally broke
If I could buy that can opener I would buy 2 of them
Congratulations to the engineer that designed it
If Black & Decker is monitoring these reviews then contact me at by EMail as I would like to repair the old one if parts are available

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I was so happy with my OLD Spacemaker can opener, so since we moved I purchased another which had to be ordered so I couldn't see THE flaw. I just received it today, and looking at the instructions I found that this one will only open a 31/2 inch can. Not all cans are that small!!! My old one, which was working when we moved, and was put up 15 years ago or more, would open ALL SIZES OF CANS!!! It basically would twist so that the side which stores under the cabinet, is the side that contains the blades, magnet, etc. It also had a button so you could remove "the dirtiest inch in you kitchen", so that it could be cleaned in your dishwasher. When it is "twisted", the side which was under the cabinet becomes the front side which opens the cans, with nothing but the counter top (far below) to restrict the can size. Since the front of this one flips down, and not far, only a small can, can be opened - NOT PRACTICAL AT ALL!!!

Thank you for offering your feedback regarding your Black+Decker SpaceMaker Can Opener. I’m thrilled to hear your original SpaceMaker served you so well for so long!, You'll be happy to know that the door for your replacement SpaceMaker can also be pushed all the way underneath the can opener, allowing for opening taller cans. Additionally, the blade assembly for your replacement is removable for cleaning, but we recommend only cleaning it by hand. Your new SpaceMaker has a two year warranty and if you need any further assistance with it, I'd be happy to help. Please reply to the email I’ve sent you from youropinionmatters@spectrumbrands.com so I can address any of your concerns.

I bought this to replace my old one. Not because it was broken but because we changed the cabinets and wanted a black one now. Problem 1 - This thing seems to be twice the depth of the older ones, so with my under cabinet lighting this thing will not fit. It's going back to the store. The other problem that I didn't try to verify is that when you open the lid, it doesn't seem to fold far enough back to actually allow you to open anything but the shortest of cans. I may be wrong about that becaucse I didn't read the manual but I tried pushing it down several times and it didn't go down far enough for me to even consider keeping it, even if it did fit under my counter. I hate to say it but why did they change a good thing, as in the older models?

Won't work with 3/4 inch cabinet facing

The facing on a cabinet must be 1/4 or 1/2 inch. I have 3/4 inch facings. I tried for 4 hours trying to mount the thing and it will not work. This should be placed on the package where customers can read it
