A Must Have for Backpackers!

I use this dehydrator for making my own backpacking meals. I also use it for drying fruit and drying meals I don't think will be eaten in time before they go bad in the fridge. This 5-tray model is a perfect size for 2 people's needs. It works consistently and mostly evenly with minimal intervention, which is great when you're busy. I would recommend this model every backpacker who likes cooking and healthy meals!

A workhorse!

We got this 17 years ago. After many years of near constant use from April to October each year, it finally gave out. Definitely got our money's worth. We hAVE dried apples, watermelon, meat, refried beans, and nearly everything from our garden. Only with melons did we have issues with uneven drying. Dried watermelon is almost like taffy and disappeared as fast as I could make it. I used it to make yogurt conveniently in 8oz jars. We plan to replace with a larger model.

Excellent product, except for one little thing

I got this for my birthday and was very excited. I've always wanted a good one, having had the cheap round one years ago. The first thing I noticed was the large surface area 5 trays would give me. It was light and well made except for a cheap feeling ill fitting door. I learned that it's loose fitting to allow more air flow out. Ok so I prepared tons of apples and pineapple slices for the first run. I turned it on, placed the door on the front, and heard a bad rattle where the plastic meets plastic on the door. I leveled it and it still happened. So I got a coaster and sponge to lift up on the door a little. It reduced the rattle but it's still there. Why don't they make these with some kind of bumpers so hard plastic doesn't rattle against hard plastic? I can't understand that. Other than that, it's pretty quiet and seems to have a quality fan and other components. It dried the apples very well, and evenly too. It's a joy to use other than the door. I wonder if their new doors, I'd have to buy, rattle too.

I purchased my Excalibur 20 years ago and finally wore it out! Back again to order another one - a five tray model this time since the children are grown and we don't need such a large one. I'll never be without my Excalibur!

We bought this unit about 3 years ago and I love it. I plan to buy another one, possibly larger, before garden season next year and up my production of dried vegetables and fruit.

My fiancé bought this for me 15 years ago, and I wore it out! I just purchased another with the new clear door and a timer - I'll be able to use the old trays to stage food for replacing when a tray is done. The 9-tray is too big for us. Our first attempts were amateur, using a food processor to slice carrots. Not necessary. One night, we dried a mess of sliced portabella mushrooms and ate them all - standing up! - dipped in sour cream. I graduated to drying my own apples and pears for the most luscious fruitcake. And until you've made zucchini chips, you haven't lived! Green is preferable, though yellow will do. Cut diagonally, a little thicker, so they hold up to dipping in salsa (dried jalapeño peppers, anyone?), hummus, or guacamole. I promise you'll never touch anything else again . . .
