I've owned it for around a year now. For the price difference I would probably choose another player. It has the features you want, but many of the "channels" have issues, and it runs very slowly. They finally added YouTube a few months ago but it runs at a glacial pace and simply isn't worth trying. Also, there's no off command (you have to unplug it), and if you leave it on like they recommend it gets hot enough to physical burn you after a few days.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

This is my Second Roku and for what I use it for both are similar - Pandora and Amazon Prime movies. But it allows me to get movies I can not get on TV, when I want them

Access to much more than cable TV

We have so much more access to TV, movies, MLB than thru cable TV. I love being able to plug my ear buds into the remote for private audio. The user interface is klunky, but gets the job done.

Love the Roku with one exception

Roku is a great product and has changed the way I now watch TV. However the new Roku I purchased has the "OK" button below the up/down;right/left buttons -- not in the middle as my previous Roku. Consequently, I keep pressing the wrong button. I guess I will just how to learn how to properly control the remote.
