GE freestanding range jb450df

I LOVE the simplicity of this range. I turn the dial and it cooks. So NOT digital!
The user manual has been randomized to fit all digital models so I do have to figure out if the self cleaning feature has a built in timer. Not a big hassle at all when I compare this to circuit board blowout and other digital nonsense. The only drawback is the smaller underdrawer due to the larger oven size.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Poor "knob" design.

The knobs on the front, which I wanted because I am short, get turned on just by bumping into or reaching above them. This has happened numerous times and not just too me. Very unsafe!! Very easy also for a child to turn them. I was told the knobs would require more strength than a small child could turn. NOT TRUE!

Has pros and cons

I have only had this in use for about 3 weeks...I will update if needed, as time/use increases. After 35 years of extreme cooking...and after a few apartment and then owning 3 different houses I have used just about all cooking type of ranges. Last 3 I have had were smooth top and wanted to get away from that. No gas available in my area and too expensive to fit for propane gas...I went back to my second favorite...the coils. I now have MS and also wanted front controls. This range is simple which I like. Here is what I do not like and feel these features could have been added for the price range. My biggest number 1 issue is that there is no pre-heat alert...either audible or a light coming on/off to alert that the oven is at temp. I find this VERY important because I COOK! I had to buy a little thermometer to check. Number 2 issue no clock.... I miss a timer. I do never did use any other clock feature such as delayed start/timed shut off etc. Just a simple clock and the ability to set a timer...especially due to disabilities and forgetting I have something in the oven or on the stove top. My 3rd issue is minor...but has happened to me about 5 times now in
the past 3 weeks.... the front knobs turn on too easy.... one little bump from an arm/body part will turn the knob. Yes, there is a light to alert that something is turned on however if you are not expecting it...just walking by it and bump it the wrong way...it turns on. By the time I have realized this has happened has been 10 to 30 minutes later...with either a red hot burner going or a hot oven...or happening to notice an alert light is on.
As for the function of the range..so far so good. It cooks well, oven temp did need adjusting by a few degrees but expected. This was also shipped with the rear adjusting legs extended to their highest level...and the front to their lowest... which was a pain to properly adjust having MS. Would have been best to receive with all at their lowest level...putting it at true counter height...and if needed tweak from there. Oh and, drawer is larger than other ranges I have owned....but a little hard to open.

Good basic range

So far after three weeks of use, oven and burners seem to work well. A little slower to heat than my old Tap-pan. Does have some cosmetic issues though. Underside of control knob plate where oven door lever is the enamel is chipped off in large spots. The bottom storage drawer indented finger pull has uneven metal finish at corners. Looks like the factory tried to repair the metal then enamel painted over it. The back of the range panel is bowed out/bent? Not allowing it to sit flush to the wall. Will be calling GE to see about fixing these items.

VERY cheaply made
on December 2, 2016

We bought this stove because it is the ONLY one we could find that would fit the opening we have and that was electric. If we could have found parts for our 35 year old range, we would have fixed it and not had to settle for this very cheaply made "disposable" piece of aluminum. It is very flimsy.

When we got it brand new, out of the box, many areas of the back and sides were bent, rippled and twisted - not a huge deal because they won't be seen, but still you would think a brand new item wouldn't be damaged. Also, there wasn't a protective blue plastic covering any of it. (The inch and half GE logo had a piece of blue plastic over it, but that was it!)

My husband, who is a Handyman, installed the range. He is very good at what he does and knows what he is doing. While "leveling" this range, he was using three individual levels. From front to back and side to side the range is level, but each individual burner is not level and all are off differently from each other. He put a level in the middle of the range top between the burners and there is almost a quarter-inch sag in the middle of the range top. There is no way to level each of the four burners equally and there is no support under the range top to alleviate the sag.

The bottom drawer feels like it was made out of a soda can. Actually, I think a soda can has more strength to it. It is incredibly flimsy and does not sit equally on the runners. One side of the drawer face is flush with the front face of the range but an eighth of an inch lower than the other side. The "taller side" is three eighths of an inch away from the range face while the "short" side is flush. The drawer front was not put squarely on the drawer. The runners are a pathetic looking bit of plastic that bend and don't hold very well with any kind of weight in the drawer. My Cast Iron Dutch Oven is too heavy for the bottom drawer to support.
I haven't even used this range yet and still cannot, in good conscience, recommend it. IF you have no other choice, like we did not, you can probably make do but expect to have to work at it for quite some time to get it leveled and don't expect a solid feeling range.

Nice Job

Just wanted a regular electric coil stove. Does a nice job of cooking & baking. Oven knob could be in a different location as it gets bumped & turned on when it shouldn't. Also wish it had a clock & timer.

Back does not fit flush against the wall. No opening for the plug at a different location.knob panel is not fully closed.Burner tray does not cover openings on knob panel.Tray panel has openings at rear.Drawer pull not deep enough and not heavy enough, also slides are very weak and hard to remove and install.

Love it but I kind of got a dud

Really like this range - simple. There are a few things wrong with it though, which is a bummer because it's the first new stove I ever bought...I've had it for about 6 months so I thought that now is a good time to post a review.
Why this model?
I chose this stove because I have had good luck with GE appliances. (Dishwasher, refrigerator, stove.) At our former home, the GE stove (that came with the house when we bought it) was almost 30-years-old when it conked out just before we moved. So I knew I wanted a GE.
Another reason I chose this range is that I'm disabled and didn't want a stove that I'd have to reach across the burners to use the knobs. This is ADA-compliant and simple to use. (Rocker switch on/off for oven light for example.) When I am wheelchair-bound I can use this oven safely because all of the controls are on the front.
A family member is planning to buy this same model of GE stove after they retire and downsize to a home where they can "age in place."
The retro styling (chicken-head knobs!) was another reason I chose this model. Goes great with my white kitchen with mangle iron. Right at home in our mid-century house.
This range is so basic that it has no "preheat beep" no clock nor timer, so I figured there'd be less to go wrong with it. But I kind of got a dud anyway. (Pics Attached).
Maybe this stove literally "fell off the back of a truck" because it has some alignment issues. The pipe vent thing that goes to the right rear burner is misaligned (see pic). The front left small burner is also misaligned (see pic) and the heating element coil will not sit correctly. (I've tried both of the small coils & each "ramps up" & won't fully seat.) There is also a chip in the enamel in the stovetop near that burner, that I found once I removed the drip pan for the first time. :(
The drip pans are low-quality, I guess, because they are rusting on me. I've only used "barkeeper's friend" on them in the 6 months I've owned the range but they look cruddy. (see pic) I'll have to get some enamel replacements.
The self-clean works (including the stinky break-in period that you have to do to new stoves now. I would take your pets and leave the house during that time - especially PET BIRDS because it was really rank).
The stove performs very well. Heats up fast, bakes well. I don't regret purchasing this model, even though there are some issues with the one I got.
I would recommend this to a friend!
