Quality of assembled parts needs improving

This is the 2nd 940 I have purchased, The first in 1984. I made the purchase because my Dad had one in the 60's (he is also on his 2nd) Mine was kept outdoors and had rusted out in too many places after almost 30 years. After looking for another grill for 6 months, I could not find one locally ( Charbroil or other brands) that would replace my old one with the quality I was looking for (no 940's available locally) . My wife went on line and ordered it from Char-Broil for our anniversary. When I received it I couldn't have been happier. It was made of even heavier duty material than my first. So I expect it to last longer than I will. Unfortunately after putting it together I found the lid of the grill did not match up with the firebox. The lid appeared to not be square. After receiving another lid and eventually a replacement grill, I determined this was a manufacturing problem. The grill lid does not seal properly against the firebox and makes it difficult to impossible to control the airflow for low and slow smoking. I was very disappointed that nothing else could be done.
I have used the grill for the past 3 years and everything else about the grill is great, All of the material used were much heavier duty than the original one I had from the tray for ashes, wheels,side trays, firebox and lid. Unfortunately, since I use it mostly for smoking I am still working on getting it sealed better. Since it is so heavy duty, I will be living with this problem for a long time until I can feel comfortable with buying a new grill and giving this one away.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

This is our THIRD CharBroil grill in 42 yrs!

We have not found a large, charcoal grill superior to the CharBroil. This is our third such grill. The others just wore out. The price is very reasonable for the excellent quality and durability of the product. The new one is the best yet!

The CB940 it the best!

I have used the CB9xx series for 50+ years. There simply isn’t another charcoal BBQ that comes close. That’s why when it came time to build our outdoor kitchen I installed a CB940 that I modified.

Overall the grill will be as good as the old model after I modify it. Casters that came with unit were not heavy enough for its weight. I installed another pair of large wheels. Unit doesn't draft well, air circulation is at the back of the box, consumes to much charcoal to fast. Fire grate does not cover enough of the area under the grates. Old fire box design was far superior. I extend to have a fire grate made like the old design. I am going to seal the cover to cooker with a gasket and install adjustable air vents to control the fire. I had my original CB940 for almost 15 years and it was great unit. With this units heavy metal construction, and the modifications I plan to make it should cook well and last a long time.

This is my second 940. My first lasted 18 years and I abused it. This one is better than my first one. It's easy to cook on and I use it to grill and smoke. This past weekend I cooked a pork shoulder for 11 hours on Saturday and hamburgers on Sunday. It is easy to access and control the fire and easy to clean up. It has outstanding quality.

Outstanding charcoal grill. The standard by which all other grills are judged. I have owned 2 over the past 30 years and wouldn't use anything else. The heavy cast iron construction maintains heat well. There are 4 settings for adjusting the coals so you can cook everything from steaks to boston butts. The only negative thing I can say is, it is difficult to attach the top to the base without having 2 men. One must hold the top while one attaches the hooks to the top and the base at the same time. It is very difficult and took me up to 30 minutes each time. It looks easy but it ISN'T. The grill is definitely worth the hassle of attaching the top though. It might be worth it to have Charbroil assemble it if the fee is reasonable.

I've always loved the CB940 grill have owned several but the 940x is not nearly as good as before. real design flaw with hood/hinge location which is smaller than fire box leaving two openings at each side at back of the hood allowing water to get into grill and into ash tray. also ash tray is too heavy to manage.

Very pleased with this grill. Big enough to smoke racks of ribs whole, perfect for indirect/searing also. Plenty of room to grill an entire meal at once. Holds temperature with few adjustments.
