Great Set But.....

First of all this set is amazing, the attention to detail is really nice and with no stickers the building experience was excellent. One of my minor complaints though is the pitchfork seems to be made out of a lower quality soft plastic and scratches every time you put it in a minifigure's hand. Still the rest of the set is really nice, the ramp isn't as big a deal for me as other reviewers said but it is a little steep. Like I said earlier the attention to detail is really nice such as the kitchen, dining hall, forestmen hideouts and tunnels(there's even a way to escape from the dungeon!) and the castle wall is also really well done. Now for my major complaint, most of the knights are female. Sad to say this almost made me not purchase the set as it is historically inaccurate and I was really hesitant about supporting Lego's woke agenda. In the end I decided to buy all new heads and replace them but it is still disappointing that Lego is going this direction. Over all this was a wonderful building experience and is a great set for adults and kids alike as it has a lot play potential. I also hope this will reboot the Lego Castle theme(minus the female knights) in the future.

Pure Nostalgia

Lego sure was able to pull on my heart strings with this set. My most memorable Christmas as a child came in the 1990s when I received some classic medieval sets. I purchased this with hopes that my children will also be able to form similar memories of their own this year for Christmas. We haven't built it yet, but I have zero doubts about my purchase decision.

Surprises!!!

No spoilers, but this build has so many surprise details in it! The promo pictures really don’t do it justice. I honestly didn’t have a lot of expectations for this set, but I have a soft spot for the old castles I used to have as a kid, so I got it anyway. I have to say this is one of the most enjoyable sets I’ve done in a while! I love the hidden treasures, secret passages, and clever commentary sprinkled in the instruction booklets. It is a very compact build and so not easy to place the many minifigs that come with it, but it makes a very striking display piece. I love all the angles of the walls. My only complaint is that the base is not very solid, which makes it difficult to move without a small bottom plate coming off here or there. Overall I’m very happy with it!

Going Old School

This set has a very old school feel of the Legos from my childhood. LOTS of blocks instead of specialty cast pieces that aren't good for much aside from building the set they came in. So many secret doors, working gears, and moving parts. The construction was elegant for the most part with several "OMG WHAT??!" moments. We loved the garderobe and the brown frog - never seen that in a Lego set before. The only downsides were minor. There is a secret hideout under a fruit stand that you can't see unless the castle is opened up (making it bad for display/diorama purposes). There were also a couple places during assembly where the construction seemed clunky. I do wish there had been ladders to all the towers - it's better than 30 years ago because there were a couple ladders and stairs, but it could have been even better. I also felt the lack of a storage place for some of the extra bits such as the pieces that come out of the horses and cows and the Lady's gear and helm. A weapon rack in her quarters would have been really neat. Finally, I loved the secret closet with the golden frog, but it's really hard to display.

Childhood revisited

This set is amazing! I love the details and the way the set folds up. This has so many small details that remind me of playing my knight castle sets when I was small. The build is fun and you definitely feel like you are exploring the castle as you go. The mini figures are amazing, I liked the amount of animals as well. This set has it all going on. I feel like LEGO has become so expensive on all sets so that’s my only low remark. Not everyone can play at the prices you ask for, it’s becoming disheartening.

Quality Control Issues Spoils Build

I looked forward to this set since the first round of fan voting! I purchased it day 1 and couldn’t wait to build it. I feel bad for all the amazing work and effort the set designers put into this set only for it to be spoiled by a poor quality product which is totally out of the ordinary for lego. And before you thumbs down this review please know that I have never been this critical of a lego set and I build over 100 sets per year easily for the past 10 years or longer.
My biggest issue is not the set itself but the lego elements. There has either been a change to the formula, the molds and/or the machinery that causes the injection points to be more pronounced and off center (see pic). Also, some of the translucent elements are not translucent anymore but cloudy. I compared the exact same elements to ones found in the latest Speed Champions winter wave and they do not have either of these issues.
Why it matters so much to me is besides my OCD it really decreased the enjoyment of the build. Almost every 1x1 element needed to be positioned as to not show the bumps. It increased the build time and at times I just wanted to give up but was glad that I was done. This does not fit in with Legos new Icons pledge to adults regarding quality
Regarding price Prior to 8/1 you could get Ninjago City Gardens for $100 less and it has over 1K pieces more and has 1 more Minifigure. If you are looking for a set for your child I would highly recommend getting the Creator 3:1 Castle or possibly 2 and do the MOC build for half the price.
The Medieval Market area is great, especially the thatch roof, but not sure why they made the building white and not tan I think it would have looked much better and been more realistic. Another good thing is there is no dire need to add on to this set but I am sure many will. Oh, and no stickers.
Shout out to the designers for adding the “Patsy” Minifigure from Monty Python.

The castle you've always wanted.

Am I 26? Yes. Is this the castle the fulfillment of a childhood dream? Also yes. Scratch that, it's better, this set blows all the other castles out of the water and sets a new standard. The skill and dedication of the builders really shows, and the attention to detail is amazing (some of my favorites being the well and the er... brown frog). I think the best thing about this set is that these guys know that the primary buyers are adults (just because of the price, skill level wise, it takes patience, but I could have probably slogged through at 12) but it's still designed to be played with. Minifigure wise, they're all pretty good, however I didn't like Sleeping Beauty as a guard and given the rich detail of all the rest, the wizard's just plain blue body is a bit boring and disappointing (I fixed both issues). It also would have been sweet to include plate armor for the Falcon knight, and of course a ghost would have been awesome! I only felt the need to improve on one thing and that was the window design for the latrine and the armory over looking the courtyard. I put one of those small technic pieces with the stud on top into the upside down piece so the piece on top can actually latch, it makes it more secure, and at this point you should have 4 in the parts pile. I did also slap together a little dock and put it at the back gate with a rowboat in case they need to escape. Basically if you can afford it, and you've always wanted a castle, buy this. I really hope we see a revival of the Castle line (from a team led by these designers) and that Lego gave these guys a fat bonus or a raise.
