After a couple of washing the handles lost the finish and turned our hands gray from oxidation. I through them away.

I am sorry that you threw them away. The silver handles should not go into the dishwasher. The detergent and high heats do cause this to happen. There is a product, Barkeepers Friend, that can help with the oxidation. You need to wash by hand and dry immediately. If we can be of further help please let us know.
