Adapter won’t release

Overall, I’m pretty happy with the product. At least I can continue to use my 18v tools with the newer 20v batteries, but the adapter, once installed into the tool will not release without using a screwdriver to pry it loose. Better improve the engineering

Great Solution!

I purchased a full set of DeWalt 18v power tools more than a few years ago and, overall, they have served me well. However, when the 20v DeWalt line came out I thought that eventually I would eventually have to replace all my 18v tools. Voila, DeWalt solved my dilemma by producing an adapter system. So I gave it a try. Wow, the battery lightens the tools considerably and, in my experience, the charge on the new LI batteries lasts longer than the old 18v NiCads. I have used the adapter in all my drills, saws, impact wrenches, etc. without fail. DeWalt does not recommend using the new battery system in one tool I have, the DC970 Drill in which I still use the 18v battery, so when purchasing the adapter system it would be wise to check on whether your tools will work with the 20v adapter system.
Yes, the locking tabs on the adapter were a little stiff at first but not so much so that it was a problem and, with use, the adapter installs and uninstalls easily. I have never had a problem with battery discharge but, then again, I make sure my tools are in the safe (off) position unless they are in use and at the end of the day, I remove the battery from each tool and then I remove the adapter from the tool as well (if you install and remove the adapter without the battery in place, you will find it much easier to mount and dismount the adapter). As shown in the photo, I have purchased 3 sets of 20v adapters and 6 batteries which allows me to keep working with multiple tools and I have yet to run out of power (although I sometimes have to wait to the battery to cool down before I put it into the charger).

Great Idea, POOR Execution

The adapter is unnecessarily bulky and nearly impossible to get free from the tool. The easiest way is to grab the tool between your knees and push the locking tabs in with both thumbs and rock it out. The clips are poorly designed, sometimes I can't get them to release. The batteries, when new and fresh would not hold a full charge (3 indicator lights) When fully charged on the included charger, the indicator showed only 2 lights. They were stamped as manufactured within 1 month of purchase, and self discharge within a day or two sitting on the shelf. They looked like a good way to get the longer life Li-ion batteries for my (7) 18V Dewalt tools. The 4+ amp batteries do fully charge (3 LED's light up) and don't discharge sitting on a shelf in a temperature controlled environment.

Did the job for me

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Every single tool I own are DeWALT 18v. I wasn’t able to find a replacement 18v so I purchased the kit. Yes, the adapter is extremely tight so it was difficult to snap into place. Well it was just as difficult to release. I would rather it be snug than falling out during use. My point, it’s a positive safety feature for me. The biggest advantage for me is the fact that I don’t have to buy ALL new tools, when the ones I own work perfectly fine.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I purchased this just a little over a year ago and love the concept but to switch the adapter part from tool to tool is so difficult that if I don't have large channel locks to push the release tabs I can't get the part out to switch to another tool.
An unfortunately one of the battery's is failing already.
I quit buying dewalt years ago because of their batterys never held a charge well and before long they wouldn't take any charge so I switched brands .
My son just purchased a lot of there battery operated tools and I saw assembled in usa sticker on one of the tools and I like that and even if not all there tools aren't made here or assembled here at least it's more then any of the other brands can say. I was going to switch to dewalt line but I am concerned about the reliablety of there batterys.
But I am impressed buy Dwelt of at least supporting our country where and when they can and that means a lot to me.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] My father passed his 18v drills onto me as the motors were still running smoothly even after 15 years but the batteries were a bit lacking. Thankfully to the adaptor i can keep going along with a little more umph behind it.
So if the bones of your tools are still strong and youre just not ready to buy all new i highly suggest purchasing the adaptors
