I have to be honest I saw a lot of reviews talking about the straps and weight of the bag, but honestly it's balanced well, and doesn't feel oversized what so ever. Its for photographers that need space and love good design. thank you Peak!
PEAK is the BEST! Bear with me... I returned the travel bag because it was too heavy for me when packed out but I kept the packing cubes, shoe pouch, tech pouch, and wash pouch. When I returned the bag I inadvertenly sent the packing cubes too. While PEAK cold not verify the cubes in the pack because they use a 3rd party contractor they sent me out new packing cubes — something I did not even request... How many companies do you know that care for their customers like this?! Don't hesitate to purchase Peak products!
I wore this bag for 5 days straight and then, bought another bag. Sigh. I wanted to love this bag (I spent a lot of money on this bag) but alas there many critical flaws. A bag can have great tech and features but if it's not comfortable to wear what's the point.
1. The shoulder straps are incredibly uncomfortable and should have had more padding. For the load capacity of this bag the straps just feel cheap and underwhelming
2. Simple tasks such as loosening and tightening the shoulder straps while wearing the bag are incredibly difficult because the adjustment straps require a) thumb in loop then b) pull out away from body and then c) pull forcefully in a down motion. This action becomes infinitely more difficult if you are wearing a winter jacket or if the bag is weighed down with an abundance of camera gear.
3. The swivel feature on the back top of the shoulder straps cause the straps to slide outward on the shoulders. I constantly have to pull the straps upward and in.
4. Mating the interior to exterior snaps to reduce the bag profile takes way too much time. Cool? Yes. Cumbersome. More Yes.
4. Zippers. With Think Tank Airport Navigator as my reference for premium, smooth, durable zippers the Travel Line zippers feel rough and 'jerky' for lack of better term.
5. Bulk. This part mystifies me. It's a rigid and big bag BUT it doesn't carry more Camera Gear than my Tenba Solstice 24 or Wandrd Prvke 31 (with Tenba BYOB 10 insert).
Fits everything perfectly. Great for travel. But wear it fully loaded (medium camera cube with gear, pouches, laptop, some clothes) for more than 30 minutes and your shoulders are done. I have the everyday 30 liter and those straps are even worse. I was excited when I was watching the hangouts during the course of the Kickstarter, learning they updated the straps so I pulled the trigger on one. Now I'm sad I did cause I can't return it. I could've easily purchased this bag from an online retailer and recieved it at the same time AND had the option to get my hands on it and have the option to return it if need be. I also backed for the duffle, so I hope that shoulder strap will have some more padding...Overall, if you need to get a fair amount of gear from point A to B and don't plan on walking around with it at the location you're visiting OR simply don't fully load it, then it'll be a great bag. Minus 1 star for each strap.
Just got the bag and most of the accessories and took it on a short trip with a hotel stay. Bag worked out great. I'm going to be upfront about my main point. Peak Design needs to work on the comfort of the bag when it is full. The shoulder straps are stiff and thin. They are too lightly padded. For a trip that had a lot of walking, I would go with an Osprey or another pack with better suspension. Other thoughts: 1. Good build quality 2. Tech pouch is a bit big, needs handle on top. 3. Wash pouch hang hook makes for awkward hang while open. I will see if it grows on me. 4. Packing cubes are great, but the handle is on the back of the cube which is opposite gap between the zippers. Small stuff could fall out while carrying. 5. I'd like to see a key lanyard inside a zippered pocket. 6. The chest strap and the hip belt buckle system needs some work. It is difficult to quickly take the waist belt and chest straps on and off and to tighten them. The hardware is metal but perhaps plastic snap buckles would be a better choice. 7. Velcro on the ID pocket doesn't work very well, needs to be better quality or bigger. 8. Wouldn't mind better organization in the upper zippered pocket. It could use a bit of dimension on a few of the other internal pockets. 9. I haven't used the other stuff yet, but they look great. So, being hyper critical about the bag which I do really like so far, but I hope this will improve the product. I do realize that pros and cons are very personal.
I was really excited for the new backpack from Peak Design. I already had 30L everyday backpack and thought it would be bigger brother version of it. I was wrong. It's using cheaper zippers and it's so hard to use side accesses. Also only one zipper (top) makes it harder to close it after taking out a camera. This is not an easy access backpack anymore, but it's a good travel backpack, which is inferior quality one compared to Everyday backpack. Would not recommend it for a camera backpack, but would recommend it for a travel backpack.
One of the best bags I've ever tried, holds a lot. My only issue with the bag is the straps carrying more than 20 pounds with the bag feels uncofortable, I wish there was a way to upgrade the straps for a more padded and wider option for heavy weight carry so that I can use the full 45L capacity.
Prior to hearing the announcement of the Travel Line, I was browsing around the market for a larger sleek, rugged, well-designed camera and travel bag. I had used the Everyday Backpack for random short excursions since it came out, but I needed something a bit more beefier and easier to access my gear. This Travel Backpack was exactly, EXACTLY what I was looking for. Incredibly well-designed and the black looks super stealthy (i.e. sexy).
The modular system in combination with both the Packing Cubes and Camera Cubes completely changed the way I packed for my trips and shoots. It's a lot more organized, allowing me to fit a lot more clothes, and more importantly I can still get access to my gear while the bag is still on my back! The tuck-away shoulder straps is one of my favorite features of the bag, as it turns your bag into a very minimalistic duffle-style bag. This came in super useful during my flight as the airlines forced me to check my bag and I have the option to cleanly tuck away the straps to minimalize snags and damage from their rough handling.
I recommend getting more than one of the Small and Medium Packing Cubes to allow more organizational flexibility. Unless you expand and really cram one of the cubes with your clothes, you can stack two and maybe three cubes on top of each other and it'll still close.
Get this bag. You won't regret it.
FYI: I order the “Whole Enchilada” Kickstarter package, which comes with one of everything within the Travel Line.
