This is my second Lenovo laptop and the fact that I'm a repeat customer says something. From a hardware perspective, the laptop is fast, snappy, and reliable. The processing power handles daily tasks effortlessly, the screen quality is sharp with excellent clarity, and the 2-in-1 form factor functions as advertised. It is a capable, solid machine for daily use.
This is my second Lenovo laptop and the fact that I'm a repeat customer says something. From a hardware perspective, the laptop is fast, snappy, and reliable. The processing power handles daily tasks effortlessly, the screen quality is sharp with excellent clarity, and the 2-in-1 form factor functions as advertised. It is a capable, solid machine for daily use.
The Major Annoyances (The Bad):
The 15-Second Keyboard Backlight Timeout: I was astonished that Lenovo has hardcoded a hardware/BIOS-level 15-second inactivity timeout onto the keyboard backlight. If you stop typing for just 15 seconds, the lights go dark, and the system fails to even retain your preference upon reboot. For fast touch-typists like myself, often working in low-light environments, this is a constant daily interruption. More importantly, it is a frustrating example of a manufacturer taking choices away from the consumer. I don't need Lenovo to decide for me when or if my keyboard should stop lighting up; that should be a basic user-controlled setting. Instead, the lack of a user-facing toggle in Windows or Lenovo Vantage stops consumers from having any control over some of their own most basic laptop settings.
Flawed Lid Ergonomics (Zero Leverage): The physical build of the laptop features a completely flush-edge design. Because there is no indented lip, notch, or raised ridge to give your finger leverage, opening the lid is a finicky, two-handed struggle every single time. How could the engineers possibly have looked at this flush edge as a usable design in real life? It feels like a classic case of prioritizing "sleek" aesthetics over basic human functionality, turning a simple daily action into an ongoing annoyance.
Lenovo Vantage Software Restrictions: Instead of providing clean control over the laptop's hardware, the proprietary Lenovo Vantage software feels like mandatory bloatware. Out of the box, it glitched with a persistent "Intelligent Thermal Solution" driver error that required a tedious manual reinstallation just to clear. Worse, you cannot remove this intrusive software without losing access to essential hardware features like Battery Conservation Mode. It is incredibly frustrating to be forced to keep a bloated background app running just to protect your battery health.
The Verdict:
The IdeaPad 5 2-in-1 is a powerful and capable laptop, but I wish it wasn't bogged down by some incredibly annoying ergonomic and firmware choices. If you don't mind dealing with a finicky lid and a stubborn keyboard backlight, the performance is great—but these are daily annoyances that affect my satisfaction with the unit. Lenovo really needs to fix these basic design oversights.
