Why is 5 inches not 5 inches?

I purchased a 20x25x5 Merv13 filter. I didn't realize that these measurements are a matter of opinion. Evidently, the "standard" width of a 5" wide filter is 4 3/8". That's OK, I'm good with the standard. But when I purchased one of these last month the actual width listed on the box (and measured) was 5 1/4". Yet it was still listed as a "standard" 5" width. That's over half an inch wider and IT DOESNT FIT! How can both of these widths be listed as 5"??

The price and filters are great. But before placing order be sure to check actual filter size needed before ordering. For the 20x25x5 there are three actual sizes to pick from.

Very poor quality control. The filter was bowed in the center by 3/4 and out of square.

Filter was not easy to find. 23X21X5. Honestly , was worried about fit, but it slid right in. I bought the premium filter, which was clearly well made. Will buy Filterbuy from now on.

Shipment of Filters

I called and talked with a very nice girl who answered all my questions very well. Last year one of our shipments of furnace filters was too small. I told this fact to the girl and she was aware of our problem. She addressed the issue and sent us a box of food filters and they fit perfectly. We also live the M13! I highly recommend this size.
