Why is there a protrusion at the top of the filter?

There is a 3/4 inch overlap in the cardboard that protrudes from the top of the filter. It has three cutouts that don't seem to have any purpose and I think it makes it more difficult for me to close and lock the door in my Trane furnace.

The filters arrive all bent up and semi crushed. They are still usable but this wasnt what I was expecting.
