I'm not ready to jump into the smart speaker phenomenon yet, so I was really happy that Sonos released a new model of their Sonos One that is microphone-free. You can still control it from your phone if you want, by configuring the Sonos app with a voice service like Google Assistant (or adding your Sonos speakers to Google Home). You can also play music to these speakers with Apple AirPlay. The sound is great. I have two speakers set up as a stereo pair in my living room. If you have an Apple phone, I would recommend using Trueplay to tune the sound. I have found that the difference is noticeable. I have the bass cranked up, but with Trueplay it adds more detail in the mid-range so music doesn't sound muddied and drowned out by the bass. You can toggle Trueplay on and off after calibrating your speaker to see if it makes a difference. YMMV. Ultimately, I'm glad that Sonos made a microphone-free speaker. For people who aren't comfortable with the privacy concerns around smart speakers, it really is nice to have a contemporary alternative.
Pros: Different Music, Different Rooms, Easy to Set Up, Expandable, Superior Sound, Wireless
The speaker was easy to set up and usually sounds awesome. But, mid-range base is really distorted on some songs. It makes a popping sound - like a literal broken speaker. I sent one back to get a replacement but the same issue persists. It's less severe if you turn off the Trueplay feature, but then the rest of the sounds isn't as good. The popping sound is very distracting and shouldn't happen with a speaker of this price and quality. Also, Apple Airplay works sporadically. It often turns off mid song for no reason and then won't reconnect. Bottom line, I love the speaker when it works properly. Unfortunately that's about 50% of the time. The online FAQs don't address the issues.
I have an echo and also some BOSE wireless speakers along with 6 Sonos in 4 different rooms. Wanted to control speakers by room and select music via the Sonos speaker and through the Echo. Turned into a NIGHTMARE. Ended up turning off the mic's on the Sonos so the Echo works now but I have to yell into the room that has the ECHO to get it to play. Sonos should have better instructions for different configuration. A matrix whereby you can select your application and then I will refer you to a setup method. Quality premium speakers should not take someone from the Geek Squad to set them up. Frustrating!!!!
Pros: Expandable, Streams All My Music, and More, Superior Sound
I purchased 3 One SL to add music to my living room and kitchen. I now have 11 spread throughout my house, patio and garage. Great sound everywhere at just the right volume
