Why is there a protrusion at the top of the filter?

There is a 3/4 inch overlap in the cardboard that protrudes from the top of the filter. It has three cutouts that don't seem to have any purpose and I think it makes it more difficult for me to close and lock the door in my Trane furnace.

Look like higher priced filters. Well built and uniform. Perfect fit. Filtering capacity will be determined over time. I'll update after 3 months use.

Not quite big enough

This matched the manufacturer's number/size but upon installation hubby says it is about 1/2" shy. I will cancel my reorder until I figure out what went wrong.
