Different dimensions!

Switched filters ( for 2 Trane HVAC) from 20-20-4 to 20-20-5 (there was space in the filter space for thicker filter). But I had big trouble to install those new filters ; not in thickness (fit well) but in height and width! Had to shovel the filter hard into each HVAC, slightly deforming them. Why different dimensions, when same brand??
