A great entry level Japanese chef's knife!

I bought this as a gift for a friend who routinely uses old, dull knives for slicing everything from veggies to steaks. Very sharp blade out of the box, not as honed as other Shun knives I own, but still good. Because of the type of steel I don't expect it to hold an edge as long either, but I will be able to sharpen it for her.
The only thing that I really don't like is the transition from the polymer handle to the bolster. The plastic is a little larger with a somewhat uncomfortable, but not a sharp edge. I think with some careful sanding I can make it better for my friend, if she wants me to.

This is my first shun knife and I have to say I’m totally impressed. Super sharp beautiful blade. Cuts like a dream and feels great in my hand. Definitely recommend.

My teenage son has been a KAI/Kershaw fan and picked this out as an intro for me to start collecting the kitchen knives. It will take awhile but can't. Sleek, smooth, crisp slicing. It makes me feel like a master cook!
