Cheap external flash hotshoe

After saving up for more than 2 years to buy this camera and several L lenses, I am very disappointed with the external flash hotshoe. I have a Canon Speedlite 480 II. The hotshoe on the camera is cheap and stiff and I have to fiddle with the flash each time I attach it as the camera does not recognize it is attached. I've had the camera since June 2012 and have had this problem right from the start. I am always fearing it is going to fail. I have a birding trip planned to Central America and I'm dreading it now as I fear the flash will fail altogether.
Cons: Poor build quality, faulty hotshoe

I've used the 7D for almost two years now. I love the feel of the body and the features it provides. I used a 1D MkIII before it and found the focus speed at least comparable if not better. For outdoor, bright light situations, I've found the performance to be superb. However, lower light situations are another story. I quickly noticed the higher ISO (800+) resulted in noise levels that were totally unacceptable. Even the lower ISO levels require noise removal which impacts the sharpness of the images. At indoor events, I now only use my wife's 5D MkII after too many disappointing sessions with my 7D. If your primary needs are for bright light outdoor shots, you will love this camera. If you need to be able to shoot indoors at low light and want anything better than snapshot quality images, I would suggest you move up to the 5D Mk II or III.

Really good system

I decided to get the 7D rather than the 60D after handling both cameras. The 7D seemed to focus faster than the 60D and it is big in your hand. I wear size 10-11 gloves and the fit was so much better than the smaller cameras that I was swayed by that feature alone. In use, the tilt screen would have been nice but other than that I am very happy with the adjustability of the camera out in the field. I shoot a lot of aperature priority and having the wheel right by my index finger to control the aperature is perfect. I somtimes use the CA and P modes and still manually run the f/stop to where the lens works best. The multiple focus selections are great too. I updated the firmware to ver 2.0 and now have the af/servo mode to play with. I only have a EF-S 17-85 f/4-5.6 zoom right now but have had results beyond my expectations. It is not just the camera you get when you buy a Canon, it is the lens correction software and the HUGE selection of excellent lenes to choose from. I am saving up for a 100mm f/2.8 L IS macro lens so I can get even sharper images. I have been shooting in raw and letting DPP fix the lens errors and have great results. I am going work harder to control my exposure and learn how to get the right white balance for the conditions. The AWB does get used but I have been playing with all the modes more lately and getting some fun results. In short, this is a very capable camera for someone who wants to dig deep into image crafting. Full frame has advantages but these crop cameras are far from obsolete!

Great camera, looking forward to the replacement! Even with firmware update which is great the 7D is becoming somewhat dated. This will be my backup when the replacement becomes available.

I have been using a Rebel XSi for almost fiver years and point-and-shoot cameras before that so this 7D was a big upgrade that is a little hard to get used to. The rebel was to begin with and learn the ins and outs of digital photography but eventually I grew out of it and decided to get a new and more advanced camera. I had been interested in this one ever since it came out and when I had earned enough money to get it, I wasted almost no time. The EF-S 18-135 mm IS UD lens is a great compliment to this camera and would recommend it that people get it as well when they buy this one. Only had it for a few days, and haven't been able to really put it through the ringer yet but I have known a few people who own this camera so I know it is a solidly build camera and that I'll be satisfied for a long time.

Great Step Up

Bought this camera as an upgrade to my 30D. Great choice better features larger sensor, sensor cleaning. The 30D is a good second camera but the 7D is now my workhorse for portraits, weddings, hockey and soccer. Great product at a very reasonable choice.

This camera does it all. The image quality is outstanding.I took the time to read the manual and watch the tutorials from Canon on line. With this knowledge photography has become fun. I have owned other Canon cameras and they all served me well. Kudos Canon.

If you don't want to go full frame

The first thing that needs to be said is that I love my Canon 7D DSLR. I purchased this camera to replace the T1i which I had been using for a couple of years now. I am definitely an amateur photographer and do not claim to be any type of authority on cameras or gear, I just know what I like.
First, the body of the camera feels quite substantial in comparison to my old T1i. I use an 18-250mm lens on the 7D which covers almost all of the situations I have encountered. Also the body is weather sealed which means I don't have to be afraid to use the camera in a light rain. All of the buttons are very thoughtfully placed on the body and after a couple days of use it was like second nature. Also, I love the fast shutter speed when shooting in manual modes as well as the 3 user defined settings. I have only set one up so far but as I find myself using different settings I can see where 3 programs would be quite useful.
This may not be the camera for you if you are looking for a camera with lots of automatic settings. One of the reason I wanted this was that there was not 7 different auto functions so it is really forcing me to be more thoughtful about my shooting and what the light is doing around me. I feel that the 7D has helped to make me a better photographer.
The one real downside to the camera is that it is not small or light, but if that is what you are looking for then you are probably not shopping for a 7D
