Best upgrade ever!

After using the Canon Rebel XT for years, I was looking forward to a much needed upgrade. Initially I looked at the 50D, but when I saw the features of the 7D; I couldn't resist. It's been the best purchase I've ever made. I shoot a lot of indoor sporting activities (e.g. volleyball, basketball, dance) and use fast f2.8 zoom lenses; but it's the ISO speeds of 1600 and higher with minimal noise which has allowed me to use faster shutter speeds to really capture the action.
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, quiet, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, easy to use, good battery life, full featured

This camera has it all. A great feature set. Great quality and a price that is very good.
One you master the focus system to fit how you shoot, it delivers typical Canon quality!
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, quiet, Quick Start-up time, good battery life, good iso range
Cons: focus system complicated to understand

Camera was bought at the photo show, delivery was promised next week tuesday, got it the next day. Took it on a test run to RI and it performed great. Controls were easy, auto focus quick, love it so far. Printed some pics and they were great.

Great new features!

OK -- here's the deal... This is a great camera! The new features (particularly the new AF system) make this camera a real leader in class... Not too surprisingly, at higher ISOs, noise is very much an issue, but the high ISO noise settings in the custom settings helps - - and with a little post processing it's not a problem..
The viewfinder is VERY bright and full of nice features due to the LCD overlay. I find the grid and electronic level to be very valuable for outdoor / landscape photography, where (at least for me) often requires some post for cropping and leveling...
The viewfinder offers a "virtually 100% view, which appears to be pretty accurate. All in all, this is a SIGNIFICANT improvement over the previous 1.6x sensor Canon bodies. Highly recommend...

Great feature list - Quality Control lacking

As a long-time Canon DSLR user (own D60, 40D, and now 7D), I was excited by the feature set announced for the 7D and grabbed one within days of release. Now that I've had it a couple of weeks, I have observations. I love the built-in flash controller, but the range is pretty limited. I love the lens micro-adjust feature, but unlike Canon's previous DSLRs, you are forced to use the micro-adjust for every lens because the default settings are so far off as to not be usable out of the box. Hey Canon, the setting should at least be close enough to use so that we can use micro-adjust for fine tuning, not to make the lenses usable. Also, do not trust the automatic focus point selection. It will nearly always select the wrong one. Switch the camera to spot focus and choose your own spot. When taking photos of people seated at a table, the stuff on the table will be in focus and the people won't. It seems like the automatic focus point selection was more intelligent on the 40D. Perhaps face recognition should have been added to the focus point selection algorithms. As it is now, it's the default setting and it's useless, so I recommend everyone switch to spot focus immediately after turning the camera on. It will save you a lot of frustration if you just want to take some quick shots. Also, this camera is very picky about large capacity Compact Flash cards. I have several different brands and only ONE of those brands (starts with "S" ends with "k") will format correctly in the camera (they all work fine in the 40D). If you can get around these quirky issues, it's a great camera. Granted, I have one of the earliest off the assembly line, so these bugs may be quality control issues which will be worked out in firmware updates or minor tweaks to the hardware in the future. Many people aren't experiencing focus issues, so it definitely seems to be quality control related. Overall though, it's a great camera with a crazy long feature list for the price. I'm in love with it.

Just upgrade from 500D/T1i to 7D. All my L lenses now feels and look more balanced with 7D body. I used to have to use Battery grip to balance my t1i with L lens, not anymore with 7D. The magnesium body in 7D also feels more rigid and solid. The focus is much faster, viewfinder is much bigger, brighter, and 100% view. All pro functions are included, high ISO noise is more controlled even with larger resolution. It's much easier to focus on life view as it can be done by half pressing the shoot button. Shooting video is a breeze and can record stills while shooting video too. I just wish it's a full frame!

Defective Battery Connection

I had this camera for only 3 days and had to send it back for exchange. I'm still waiting as it is on back order. Although the batter was fully charged, when turned on the LCD panel flashed and indicated no battery life, camera was turned off, but the LCD continued to flash. I took the battery out, put it back in and the camera was operational, but the AF seemed sluggish and not as accurate. The camera was turned off for about an hour and when I went to turn it on, the same problem happened again. This happened repeatedly for the 3 days that I had it. It has all the features I've been looking for, and the few photos I shot were great. I can't wait for the replacement.
Pros: excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, easy to use, pop-up flash master for off camera slaves
Cons: Heavy/Bulky, not a full frame
