A good choice

I'm been an avid amateur photographer for about 40 years and owned professional grade cameras (and did my own processing) back in the days of film, but entered the digital SLR market with the lower end Canon Rebel XT about 3 years ago. I decided to update and was trying to decide whether to go with a new version at the same level (Rebel T1i) or take a step up to the 7D. After considerable research and trying both cameras in the store, I decided to go for the 7D and have been very happy with the choice.
The camera is well built, environmentally sealed and takes excellent photos. Although it has more features than my Rebel XT, it's actually easier to use due to improved layout of menus and controls, the larger LCD, and the ability to create your own menu with features that you use most.
The only con is that it is larger and heavier than the Rebel, but the 7D still fits in my old walk about camera bag and the added weight is not noticeable when shooting.
If you can afford it, I'd highly recommend the 7D

I just bought this a few weeks ago and haven't even tested everything that the 7d has on it. The picture quality is superb and I would say, better than the 5d (Mark 1). It is easier to use than the older 5d and has far more features. Now I can take pictures that would have required flash, without flash and that still come out great.

Good Stills but Video falls short!

The Image quality in stills is better at Hi ISO above 800 but at low ISO is not an improvement from the 40D. I am seeing more noise from ISO 100 to 400 on the 7D. It cleans up well in post and down sampling helps but the real factor here is the poor video downsampling.
Video mode sounds perfect until you have to look at the files and see the quality. The downsampling in the camera is just not up to par even with the HV series of camcorders. 720p 60 is unusable in anything but people faces due to heavy aliasing that ruins videos with stair stepping and moire. They are touting this camera as a professional Imaging tool and that quality is not for production. 1080p 24 looks much better but still gets horrible pattern shots like water and striped patterns on clothing and architecture. Moire and other artifacts can ruin hours of work. If you are buying this camera for the 60p mode you should explore your options further, quality is just not up to par.
To make matters worse the AGC on the audio side has already ruined several shots completely that required the audio with even a hi quality external mic. The sound should have the ability to control audio levels and disable AGC. This should be added in the next firmware, ruining perfectly good quiet shots is not a good advertisement for Canon. Please you need to give us audio controls of some kind this is something that hinders creativity. A separate audio recorder just makes for pointing the Canon problem with AGC even more and adds several steps and problems to the recording process.
On the positive side the flash control, viewfinder and speed are phenomenal. The video can be great if carefully set up to avoid the pitfalls of the down sampling and can produce fantastic results. The ergonomics are great but expect to get tired with such a heavy camera, it really starts to bog you down with fast glass, it will be quite heavy.
If this camera had moire under control in video, AGC disabling with audio level control and 12 or 14 instead of 18MP it would have been a perfect camera.
Audio can be fixed by firmware, please Canon make the right thing!

Canon Does It Again

I upgraded to this camera from a 50D and was not disappointed. The 8 frames per second is fantastic. The camera handles well and feels good in the hand.
Pros: Superior build quality, Bright LCD, easy to use

Well this is a great camera. I was worried at 1st about diffraction and how it effects the sharpness of the pixels. I'm not a pixel peeper but from what I see it's fine. Great image quality even at high iso's up to 4000. I read a whole bunch of reviews about this camera the good and the bad. Then I decided to buy it. I'm glad that I did. The auto focus is fast and accurate. I shoot action sports and stunt riders on motorcycles. It helps to not worry so much about noise levels when I'm shooting with available light at night. Being able to trigger and control my wireless flashes is a plus. I use radio poppers to widen the range. But I still wish I could sync them wirelessly at high speed without having a st-e2 or 580ex2 as a master. All in all this is the perfect camera for users who want a great build quality dslr with a lot of features that helps make your job more simple.

Shot frozen plants w/ 100mm F 2.8 Canon macro

7D looks good

I have upgraded from the 40D to the 7D. I use the camera mostly for wildlife photos. I really like the one screen adjustment instead of pressing all the different buttons.
Image quality is very good so far but this is a slow time of year for my photo work. I am a hobby-est. The one problem I have is that my Apple Aperture does not read the RAW files. Not a problem with my 40D. I need to get with Apple on that.

Wishing for more....

I have used the 7D for almost two months and it does provide improvements in functionality in terms of auto focus speed and access to settings. However I have been very disappointed in the image quality with respect to this camera's ability to capture scenes requiring wide dynamic range. Even with much tweaking and experimenting, it seems as though the 7D may not be capable of maintaining fine detail in both the shadows and highlights simultaneously. This difficulty became pronounced when I shot two weddings recently using the 7D. Unfortunately, the brides were not impressed with the lack of fine detail in their wedding gowns, an issue that was NOT caused by post processing errors or the use of improper camera settings or poor shooting technique. I would have liked to have seen a 7D with fewer megapixels and better low light performance and better dynamic range capability.

Cons: Poor image quality, noisy, poor color fidelity
