High Performance at a Low Price

The 7D marks a major change in Canon's philosophy. Prior to this point, there has been a great delineation between Canon's professional 1-series bodies and the rest of their DSLR lineup. The 7D bridges that gap by offering professional features in a relatively low-priced package.
The 7D provides, fast, accurate autofocusing that can track a moving subject, along with a fast 8 frames/second rate. It has a full 100% coverage 1.00X magnification viewfinder. It boasts what may be the lowest image noise level of any APS-C body. The feature set is substantial, the body is solid, and the price is reasonable. The only thing missing is the full frame sensor (and the full frame price). The 7D is a good deal.

Superior Camera

I've owned a 20D for about 5 years and I've waited for major improvements before upgrading. When I saw the spec sheet for the 7D I knew this would be the one. Now that I've owned it since October, I've been able to put it through the paces and I am very pleased with this camera. I do mostly portrait photography and I can't believe how beautiful this camera performs. The picture detail is amazing. I simply love this camera and expect it to last me for a long time.

Awesome Value

This is a great camera, and a great value. The AF is a big step in the right direction. It takes a bit of adjusting coming from an XXD line camera due to a more involved menu system, but that's partially due to added features.
The only complaint I have about this is that in video mode there are only pre-set combinations of resolution and frame rate. At 720p you get 60 fps (50fps in PAL mode). Why they couldn't have two independent choices for resolution and framerate, like the photo side has for resolution and compression, is beyond me. I would seriously love to see a firmware upgrade address this.

A Fine Piece of Equipment.

I had a 50D and upgraded to the 7D. What a step up in IQ! The new and improved AF system is awesome. I have 2 golden retrievers and it is dead on everytime were out playing. The noise levels at high ISO is very low and makes for usable images. The wireless flash system works well to although I dont really use it yet. Its build quality is rock solid and feels like a solid piece of equipment. The weather sealing works good, had it out in a snowstorm and water was running off the camera and it never missed a beat. I would strongly recommend this camera for anyone wanting a more professional type of setup.

Really great camera

Have had the camera for about 2 months, and have taken 4,000+ pics. From aylight beach shots to night football and everything in between and the camera excels everywhere. The video is basic, but great quality, full 1080p and outputs in .mov extension, which is great - one less conversion.

Very Good but Complicated camera

This is truly a remarkable but very complicated camera, with a high learning curve. I shot about 170 shots in learning and testing the camera, I was pleasnatly surprised that very little or no sharpening was required in virtually all of the shots. So that leads me to noise; definitely the camera could have benefited from keeping the MP range say 12-14; however, based on my own results, I believe most everyone will be pleasantly surprised with the noise performance. I would say most will find noise in the 100-1600 ISO ranging from very low to moderately low. I do strongly suggest bothering to read reference books and visiting forums for advice on various shooting situations. You may find what might seem to be a logical setting, is not what works in practice. As far as video is concerned, I have no immediate plans to use it.

Solid Upgrade

I bought this camera as an upgrade to my EOS 30D. The Canon EOS 7D is certainly a solid upgrade:
This camera works well for a variety of subjects; I have used it to shoot sports, wildlife, landscapes, architecture, weddings and portraiture.
The APS-C size sensor is compatible with EF and EF-S lenses, a capability lost on cameras with full-frame sensors. This can be a factor, if you have multiple EF-S lenses and want to continue using them with the 7D.
The high ISO range (up to 12,800) eclipses low light settings, like school gyms, and multiple noise reduction settings keep grain to acceptable levels. Also, 8 frames-per-second shooting lets me capture detailed sequential motion series of animals and athletes.
Tracking moving subjects works very well in AI Servo mode. Capturing birds in flight with a 500mm super telephoto lens--handheld--is not a challenge for this camera. Plus, the AI Servo mode can be customized to meet various in-motion subject demands.
The 7D features a Q, or Quick Control, button which displays 16 camera settings. User's can change each via the Quick Control dial or the Main Dial. This saves critical time, and proves invaluable, if you are shooting an event like a wedding ceremony, where you can't have a "re-do."
The 7D is packed with 27 Custom Functions in four categories: Exposure, Image, AutoFocus/Drive, and Operation/Others. You can also display the Electronic Level, a Electronic Grid, auto focus points being used in your images, hot spots in images, etc. These features give feedback on what's good, and bad, about an image, saving frustration in the end.
With the 7D, files are big. Consider Image Quality selection carefully; if you shoot RAW+JPEG, your file sizes will exceed 25MB. You can fill up a 4GB CF card with 160, or fewer, images. Use high-end compact flash cards to improve data storage rate. Also, see if you computer can handle the demand of such file sizes, and verify your programs are compatible with the RAW format.
There are compatibility issues between the 7D's RAW format images and some of my editing programs. To compensate, I convert RAW images to JPEG in Canon's Digital Photo Professional for later editing; or, I select JPEG image quality prior to shooting. I expect editing program updates to fix this issue.
I highly encourage owners to read the user's manual and set up their 7D to match their shooting style and to take advantage of these capabilities. You can even download video tutorials from Canon onto the 7D and play them on the camera's LCD.
Overall, I am very pleased with my EOS 7D, and I recommend it to anyone wanting to purchase an affordably priced, professional grade camera.

After upgrading from the 50D I am extremely satisfied with the 7D. I was still happy with my 50D but really wanted HD video. The picture quality from the 7D is better than my 50D, with less noise and more detail in every situation. As others have stated, I have no problem getting nicely saturated, very crisp images from my 7D. Yes, video is rather basic with not a lot of options, but I don't need more than what the 7D offers. It would be nice to have more control over the audio, especially when using a lens with IS. Sometimes I am recording a quiet scene and end up with too much noise from the camera. Only other downside for me is I greatly miss the 50D's full auto without flash setting. I used it a lot for quick shots in unusual lighting conditions and the Q screen in CA mode on the 7D just isn't fast enough all the time. The 7D is my dream camera in every other way and the flash preference wouldn't be a problem if I could save CA settings in one of the three custom slots. Maybe a firmware update can do this? Anyway, the 7D offers plenty of detail, fine color reproduction and good basic HD video for a price that seems low for what you get in the 7D. I don't have L series lenses (yet!) but get beautiful results with the 18-135mm IS, 55-250mm, 50mm f/1.4 and the 10-22mm Canon lenses I own. I am very satisfied with every Canon product I've owned and would recommend this camera to anyone.
