Nice camera

I've had the camera for about a month. Came with the 28-135mm zoom. I have been shooting mostly track meet action shots and have not been disappointed. I shot some basketball in a gym also, and had to crank up the ISO. At 6400 I was getting good exposure without much noise. The 8fps high speed burst mode gets the dramatic positions of athletes that you want when you shoot sports. I am looking into getting a better zoom, like the 70-200mm f4, so I can get more DOF. This camera pans really well. You can follow a runner using a high shutter speed in burst mode. Images come out with blurred background but sharp subject -- pretty cool. The general hardware is very robust on this camera. I use a battery grip with it, which makes it relatively heavy, but I find the extra weight just makes the camera feel more secure in my grip. I would definitely buy this camera again, and recommend it especially to photographers who want to shoot action in burst mode.
Pros: good battery life, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, quick menu is a nice touch, fast and reliable bursts

focus crazy
on April 19, 2010

focus varies from day to day and is usually off. though once in a while it is accurate. using the adjustments helps sometimes, though sometimes does not work at all. very bad when using it as a professional camera.

Firmware Update?!
on April 11, 2010

Like i tell everybody that asks about my 7D... these new DSLRs are changing the video capture game forever... the only gripe i have about this camera is the fact that they haven't upgraded the firmware for the audio... to have manual controls like the 5D's would be nice... im sure they will have it coming out soon...right Canon?... also it runs alittle hot... otherwise i love the camera... (cameras previously used are RED 4k, HVX, HD-110u, 5DM2, EX-1, and i love the 7D.)
Pros: good battery life, quiet, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use, its a canon ;)
Cons: needs upgrade for manual audio, gets really hot during video recording

It was worth the wait
on April 11, 2010

I have waited for years to purchase a digital camera. This camera was truly worth the wait. For people that want professional features at a affordable price, this is the camera for you. This is only the third camera that I've purchased over my 55 years. For those of you that don't want to read all of the technical details that so many people use in the photography world; I will just say that this camera will do 99.999% of most of us buy a camera for.
This purchase will make you very happy that you have a great photographic tool to enjoy for years to come.

Very Impressed

I had been using a Canon Rebel XT for a number of years but felt the time had come where I needed a camera that would give me more "on the fly" access to features.
The Canon 7D has been very impressive. I can easily change ISO speed, AF and Drive modes without having to access the menu like I did in the XT.
I did not make my decision lightly. I did a lot of research but because of the dual DIGIC4, 19 point AF and self cleaning sensor, I went with the 7D even over the full frame 5D Mk II.
I happen to like heavy so I don't mind, but this thing has to be a third larger than my XT. I fully expect to see the word TONKA stamped somewhere on the body. It is really solid.
I will admit that I was expecting a little more difference between the 8MP XT and the 18MP 7D, but the more photos I take the more I see the subtleties between the two and the 7D clearly puts it in another league.
The difference in brightness and size of the LCD is night and day. I don't have to go run and find shade anymore.
I recently took some surfing pictures. I attached my Canon 70-300 IS USM lens, and let it rip at 8 fps. Not only was it fast, but the camera and lens tracked the focus extremely well. With my XT, focusing was not fast enough.
I haven't even touched the HD video, yet...
Good job Canon!
Pros: good battery life, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation
Cons: accessory cost

Nice, but....

The 7D is a nice camera IF you are buying it just for it's ability to take live movies. Do not expect better pictures than a 40D or 50D. This camera is not built for the weather, and does not have face recognition. The camera is a little faster, and the view has been increased from 95% to 100%. Very nice camera, just not for the price. I just feel anyone spending this kind of money should consider the 5D Mark ll . This is a better camera than the 50D, and the movie funtion is great.
Pros: good battery life, quiet, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: Poor image quality, Poor build quality

The Dials No Longer Need to Click
on April 2, 2010

Recently directed a car commercial and used 7D in HD for most of the spot. Loved being able to adjust the aperture through capture. If the back dial was free of clicks i.e. smooth turning/free turning I could have used sequences with dialing up/down in the piece. The clicks translated back to the lens as real-time "bumps" and created a very slight jump. Clicks were nice for stills - time to update the dials for motion.
Pros: quiet, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: Missing features/settings, Poor build quality, Short battery life, dials click when truned

It lacks the PIC modes that make it easy to hand to a less experienced photographer. Other than that, nice camera.
Cons: no pic modes
