Great Camera but...

I think this is a great camera, it has a lot of features that you would look for in a camera...However, the one down side is the small sensor size. It is my opinion that the sensor size in the camera is too small, the 1.6x cropped sensor size is awful in low light, I don't know why the 1.3x cropped sensor wasn't used when it still would be an affordable solution (they may have had to charge 100-200 more dollars, however still affordable), this would be a solution to the lower light issue this camera has with its performance. Other than that the Canon 7D is great for all types of photos, whether you're taking photos of a model or taking shoots at the local skate park, with up to 8 frames per second you can take action shots or pay close attention to detail with the next young aspiring model that is attempting to be on America's Next Top Model. The features are easy to control in the camera, it is missing a few features that lower priced canons posses (such as the preset setting with rabbit/faster shutter speed), however you can control the settings in the C1, C2, C3 settings (such as the ISO, shutter speed, aperture, etc...). So overall I think this is a great camera, just a small sensor size (1.6x cropped instead of 1.3x cropped, which is should have been). Also use the Manuel focus to get sharper images, I find that the auto focus is softer (except with the L-Series lenses). So all in all the 7D is great.
Pros: Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Solid Operation, Simple controls/menu, easy to use, great images
Cons: Missing features/settings, noisy, small sensor size, sensor needs to be 1.3x

dead/hot pixels at high ISOs and Long exposures

I bought this camera to do some serious night photography. But found dead/hot pixels in the images when blown up.
Day time shot are good. I changed 3 7Ds all had the same problem.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

7D is a great camera and a significant improvement over the 50D.
I have gone through the following Canon's 10D, 20D, 40D, 50D, and now 7D. It's my feeling that the 40D was the greatest leap (maybe because I skipped the 30D) and the best value until the 7D. Though it costs a little more, it is in a different league. I've used the same lenses throughout and tests obviously show the cameras get progressively better.
In my experience the 40D was the easiest camera to pick up without a plan and produce the highest percentage of really sharp pictures. The 7D is close to the 40D for percentage of good shots, but not quite there. The 50D was a fantastic camera, but you had to earn the photos and really think about what were doing to get the high quality pictures out of it.
The 7D lacks the easy mode settings and I miss them dearly. I really liked the 50D mode button layout and wish that would have come forward. I'm all for manual mode abilities, but sometimes I just want to hit the dummy button and push the trigger.
The video in the 7D is great when using a tripod and your subjects stay in place. But it is very hard to keep things in focus, you really have to pre-compose your shots and not have a lot of movement or you notice it later while editting.
I am annoyed that the 7D shares the battery and power accessories of the 5D and not the 10D, 20D, 40D, and 50D since that is what I moved from and had lots of spares.
On the plus side, the 7D uses off the shelf cheap IR pocket remotes and I no longer need the 1800's tech wired shutter remote. However, the camera times out which is incredibly frustrating. I'm all for a power save OPTION, but it should not be the detault. I want to be able to leave the camera on focused on an object waiting for my IR remote to trigger until the camera loses battery or the power supply fails. It's completely annoying and counter productive to have it time out in the remote mode. If I'm setting up something remote, I should be able to sit there forever without having to go back to the camera.
Each camera I've owned listed above would aquire dust spots. Usually removable with following the cleaning procedures and a little blow thingy to clear or diminish the impact. So far the 7D has not had so much as a tiny spec. By now based on my history of use, I should have gotten some dust in there. I don't know if its the improved coating, the improved auto dust cleaning, or blind luck, but the sensor is spotless and I've done nothing special. I am extremely happy with that aspect of the camera.
Pros: good battery life, quiet, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation
Cons: Missing features/settings, Difficult to use, Heavy/Bulky, Complicated controls/menu

I have had the 20d, 30d, and two 50d's as well as the 5dMark2. When I first got the 7d I didn't like it at all. I felt it shot horrible JPEG's and I was very upset with the autofocus. I have since learned that the RAW files from this camera are perhaps the sharpest most colorful I have seen out of any Canon yet. The autofocus is a different deal. Once I set the focus point to the center through programming the camera performed perfectly, much like my old EOS 3 film camera's. The problem here is that when all the focus points are set the camera will go to the movement. If the movement is the ripple and not the duck you will have a focused ripple everytime. Switch the focus to center, focus lock, and you will think this thing is a dream. Just takes a little time to figure stuff out, but don't pass on this camera.
Pros: good battery life, quiet, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use, sharp consistent images.
Cons: could care less about the video.

Very nice upgrade from 40D

I bought this camera for the improved autofocus system plus the 100% view finder. It turned out both of these features were great and have helped turning me into a better photographer. In addition, I found the following features very helpful: build-in 1/3 grid on view finder, very nice LCD for immediate review, very easy to switch between focus point, very nice fill-in flash features plus high speed synch feature when using with the 580EX II.
Pros: good battery life, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Simple controls/menu, easy to use, nice and bright 100% view finder, build in 1/3 grid on view finder, awesome autofocus system

I recently upgrade from the Rebel xs to the new Canon 7D a nice change my pictures are better the color are brittler .
Pros: Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Solid Operation
Cons: Short battery life

Solid camera, but won't work for me

I purchased one of these about 3 weeks ago and was not at all pleased with the metering inconsistancy in brightly lit scenes. So I returned it, got another and well...same problem. If you're just taking snapshots or family photos the camera is fantastic. It also works well in shaded scenes. But I sell thousands of pictures of kids playing youth sports. I didn't need a portrait camera...my 5D Mark II is perfect for that. I replaced my 40D simply looking for a little better performance in low light, but mostly for the extra FPS rate.
The meter is terribly inconsistent in bright scenes.. I'm now going to end up replacing the 7D with a 50D. Wishing I hadn't sold my 40D already, but I've never experienced anything like this before. Normally a new product out erforms the old one. This one does, in most instances, but too many shots are unusable. I guess I should just suck it up and move up into the 1D Mark IV.
You guys have got some work to do with that new metering system of yours.
Pros: quiet, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, Solid Operation, easy to use
Cons: inconsistent meter
