Excellent upgrade to my camera selections

I have been using the 40D for a couple of years and have been quite happy with it. I do a lot of sports photography (hockey) and need a camera that focus's quick and can take a lot of successive images which the 40D did well. I decided to give the 7D a try basically because I was wanting an new camera and had been debating between the EOS Mark IV for and EOS 7D for several weeks.
Although I really wanted the Mark IV - my bill fold just would let it fit in and all of the reviews that I have read for the 7D actually shows it to be almost as good as the Mark IV so I decided to make the purchase of the 7D.
The first thing that I noticed when using the camera this past week end for 3 hockey games was the quick focus, and the excellent colors that it was reproducing. Once I downloaded them to my website - it was obvious that the improvement in the pictures was great.
Things I didn't care for - no included software to use, which was disappointing. It would have been great if Canon would have provided a software program to work with the video - now I have to go search around for software to process that with. After paying the price for this camera, and not getting software to work with the end product with is disappointing.
Pros: great camera - takes excellent pictures
Cons: no software provided to work with the video shots.

Amazing Camera

I bought the 7D last winter as an upgrade to my 40D. I must say I have been pleased with the consistent output of the 40D but wanted the speed for my sports shots. The 7D is amazing and comes with a whole load of bells and whistles not on the 40D and in fact not a part of the 5D Mark II (which I purchased about 5 months ago).
The shutter speed on the 7D is fast and quiet. I've taken indoor concert pictures in natural light and have been amazed with the quality of the pictures the camera produces even at very high ISO speeds.
I would have to agree there was only one problem I have had with the 7D as at least one other reviewer wrote about and that has to do with the white balance. Right out of the box the balance was off. I have found however several ways to correct the problem.. One has to do with the use of an Expodisc filter(It works with custom white balance) and the other trick is to adjust on the fly using live mode by adjusting kelvin on the view screen. I also have found that over time the white balance issue has pretty much disappeared.
As amazing as it may seem after buying the 5D Mark II (an outstanding camera and incredible for portrait work) it made me appreciate the added features of the 7D even more. For speed the 7D beats the 5D Mark II hands down. Disk format is lightning fast, has more features and a built in Speedlight flash master transmitter.
As others have noted this would be the perfect camera if it was full-frame. Irrespective it is a best bang for the buck.
Pros: fast shutter speed, terrific pictures, outstanding for sports, loaded with features, amazing iso range
Cons: white balance can be touchy

Awesome Camera

Love this camera! I shoot photography professionally and this camera's autofocus system has upped my photo keeper rate from 60% to a consistant 90+%! It is always in focus! I love it!
I wish it had a full frame! I hope that the 5d MK III has the 7D's autofucos system, or the 7D MK II has a full sensor! I will buy either of these and use my 7D as a secondary.
Pros: autofocus is awesome
Cons: not full frame :)

Horrendously Disappointed

I bought this camera expecting it to be far better than my 50D. How wrong I was. There was rarely a time when I had to go above ISO 100 with the 50, with the 7, there is barely any time that I can shoot under 800. Low light, forget it. You will find, grain the size of snowballs, and noise like ants on honey. The focus, is horrendous. It back focus's , it front focus's, maybe 2 out of 10 shots you do actually get focus. Forget about high speed tracking focus, you will be lucky to get one shot in. Even with a 200mm Prime with a standing solid object it is so slow to focus and takes forever to actually take a shot. Sounds like a kurthunk, that is how slow it is. I have used Canon for years and I am totally baffled as to why this is such a bad camera compared to everything else I have ever got. I have told people NOT to buy this camera and shown them why, told them why. I have told them to go to the 50D for far superior handling of shots. I will never recommend this camera unless something drastic happens. I dislike and wish I had never bought it. All these problems, have sucked the life out of me, I do not get any joy of doing my job anymore or shooting, because I am constantly worried about the camera and if it will actually take a picture in focus, without grain or noise.
Pros: it is black
Cons: noise, back focus, slow lag time, iso, soft focus, grain, front focus
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Great for video but lacks key features
on January 13, 2011

I've been a filmmaker for over 20 years and I've used some of the best movie cameras in the industry. I was really impressed with the way this camera captures video. Outstanding picture quality.
But I became quickly discouraged by the fact that there is no option to disable the Automatic Gain Control (AGC), or use manual audio settings. While I'm used to syning audio in post from working with film, I was really hoping this camera would allow me to work with an onboard mic, but the AGC makes it imposible to get usable audio. This is even more frustrating when Canon has lower end cameras with the ability to disable AGC and control audio levels!
Please Canon, release a firmware update that will:
1. Disable Automatic Gain (AGC)
2. Allow for manual audio level control
3. Provide CLEAN HDMI output
4. Provide crop marks for 1:85, 2:35, 2:40
Enabling these features will make this a 5 star camera!
Pros: great video, great stills, 1080p, 24p
Cons: automatic gain control ruins your audio, no clean hdmi output, no aspect ratio crop marks for 2:40:1

Great camera, but still has WB issues

I've had the 7D for over a year now, and have been very impressed with its ease of use, feature list, quality construction, and superb image quality. I say "superb" with one caveat--the white balance is absolutely horrible. No matter what I do, I can't get the colors to display correctly, and it's not just a simple warm/cool adjustment. I kept hoping Canon would fix this with a firmware update, but apparently that is not going to happen. Just be sure you shoot in RAW and hope that you can get the colors right in post-processing. Otherwise, reds will sometimes look magenta, blues will be way oversaturated, etc. I never had any trouble with this on my Rebel XTi. I guess if I knew how to use Photoshop better it might not be such an issue. Still working on that! Other than this problem, the 7D is an absolute perfect camera.
Pros: good battery life, quiet, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use, great low-light shots
Cons: color/white balance issues
